Guest guest
Hi All, I had an HM operation just over a week ago after 10 years of Achalasia. Does anyone know how long it takes before you start gaining weight again? I'm 5' 8 " tall and only weigh about 120 pounds - right on the edge of underweight according to all the BMI stats. I really could do with gaining a few pounds. Does anyone have any experience of weight gain?
Guest guest
Dove Bars! Â They have never failed me in a quest to gain weight! Not the best nutrition, but they do work. Congratulations on your HM - and many healthy pounds to you. Kim ________________________________ From: " s.snelling@... Guest guest
I'm just past a month out, and have gained 10 pounds. It'll happen, don't worry, lol! Guest guest
I am kind of hoping not to gain weight after my HM. I am still fluffy. The weight loss will do me good. Guest guest
I'm up 20 lbs but it did take a while (my surgery was 14 months ago). How do you do with ice cream (not low fat, low sugar, I'm talking Haagen Dagz)? That's how I stopped *losing* before surgery. > > Hi All, > I had an HM operation just over a week ago after 10 years of Achalasia. > Does anyone know how long it takes before you start gaining weight again? Guest guest
You had me worried for a minute - here in the UK Dove bars are a brand of soap! A bit of googling has found me the UK equivalent. Even if it doesn't work for me, it will be worthwhile trying! > > Dove Bars! Â They have never failed me in a quest to gain weight! Guest guest
I believe it really depends on you and how quickly you're able to eat more, etc. With me, at first I couldn't very much at one time. Now, I still can't eat big meals, but I can eat a little more than I use to last year. I'm also exercising more, which I didn't have the energy to do before the HM (you know, with no food in my belly and all) Overall, I had lost 55 lbs, and since my hm 2 years ago, I've gained 25 lbs back and am happy at this weight. Best of luck! Leo > > Hi All, > I had an HM operation just over a week ago after 10 years of Achalasia. > Does anyone know how long it takes before you start gaining weight again? Guest guest
Hi, Before my HM in August 2011, I was around 156, I lost weight drastically starting about 4 months before and up until my HM due to the symptoms getting worse. So, right before I went in for surgery I was 115. Now after the HM, I'm 123, a bit larger. I lost a lot of muscle weight and I know that weighs more than fat. I'm flabby right now but working on toning up. I'm sure after toning up, my weight will increase but it will still take some time to gain the weight I used to be (not sure I want to gain all that weight:-). My appetite is not the same that's for sure. I been taking vitamins, nutritional supplements and toning and some cardiovascular exercises hoping that will help increase my appetite. Maybe these suggestions will help. > > > > Hi All, > > I had an HM operation just over a week ago after 10 years of Achalasia. > > Does anyone know how long it takes before you start gaining weight again? Guest guest
My HM surgery was about six weeks ago. I am back to full diet for several weeks but I haven't started gaining weight yet. Started going to gym now and picking weights with the hope that I may gain another 10 to 15 pounds. I lost about 20 pounds before my HM surgery. I am taking PPI acid reducers, not sure if that is not letting the weight go up. Before I had Achalasia, I had to work in the gym really hard to keep my weight not go up. So I stayed around 180 pounds. But now I am stuck at 160 or so pounds and does not matter what I eat and how much, it is not going up. > > > > > > Hi All, > > > I had an HM operation just over a week ago after 10 years of Achalasia. > > > Does anyone know how long it takes before you start gaining weight again? When you eat as much as you want it may still be less than what you had before because of the smaller stomach and that you have gotten used to that. I don't know if this has much real effect or I just imagine it, but I have noticed that after major events like the myotomy that my metabolism seems to increase for longer than I would expect. I assume this has something to do with the immune system being more active. Ever notice how scars change over time? That is your immune system at work. It builds injuries up temporarily and then keeps rebuilding them in stages until normal. This can go on a long time. It all takes energy, just like growing. You may even notice that your temp is just a bit higher than you would expect. Or I may just be nuts. notan
Guest guest
I did have a fundoplication, and I am unable to eat meals larger than a child size portion. I know it's only been two weeks since the op, but does anyone know if your stomach does actually stretch to a larger size or is that just a myth? > > > > ... Guest guest
My doctor said it was a myth. I think some people can eat more because the stomach empties quicker at the bottom. > > > > > > ... Guest guest
I got partial fundoplication done. According to my surgeon, it only reduces *very* little of stomach size. Btw, I am back to eating normal amount of diet. The only difference is that I am still eating lot of oatmeal, I got used to eat it during my Achalasia days and I started liking it so much that it is hard for me to stop eating it. That may be the reason I am not gaining weight anymore. > > > > > > > > ... Known as gastric dilation (like esophageal dilation but in the stomach) it is a problem for people after lap band and gastric bypass if they continue to eat too much. What limits us after surgery may not all be because of the size of the stomach but also because when we eat it stretches the LES and the scar tissue there and possibly some adhesions and stitches. Over time these also become less of a problem. So size may be part of it and the stomach may stretch some but that may not be all that happens. notan

The Dor is only a 180 degree wrap while the toupet is 270 degrees. With the Dor the fundus is pushed up against the esophagus covering the myotomy and fastened but the toupet is fasten to one side of the myotomy then pulled around one side and the back of the esophagus and continuing around to the front again and then fasten to that side of the myotomy, but not covering the myotomy. Here is a Nissen 360 degree fundoplication: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/dc/Nissen_fundoplication.p\ ng/200px-Nissen_fundoplication.png That part that is wrapped around the esophagus is not going to hold any food. It isn't a large part of the stomach but it does make it smaller. notan
Guest guest
Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm finding eating 'little and often' is the best way to go at the moment, hopefully will build up to bigger things soon! Now I'm back at work I've started gaining a bit more muscle and have put on about a pound this week. Feeling quite proud of myself! Let's hope it lasts. Simon.
