Hi Lindell,

Sorry to read how frustrating this has been for you. In my case, nifedipine did

the trick, but soda (caffeine or decaff, doesn't matter), is my preferred

choice, since it does not involve taking drugs and works faster. Easy for me to

say, but you have to keep trying things. Over the years so many suggestions have

been made by people who try things out of left field that they find works

(though not all things work all the time, and some things only work when taken

immediately).

Probaby speaking to your GI is a total waste of time, as you recognize. What

about other things (off the top of my head) that people have tried, such as

sipping ice cubes, or ice, or icicles, eating crackers, drinking soup, hot

water, cold water. There have been so many suggestions, perhaps one might turn

out to be your " cup of tea. "   (Oh, I forgot, you said tea makes it worse)

Then there is the question to ask, but maybe only after you have tried

everything imaginable - " what makes your esophagus different that it does not

respond to " treatments? "   I don't recall if you have posted as to how long ago

you had your HM, but as you probably know, people who have had HM's tend to have

spasms worse initially.

Please try following other suggestions until you find something that works, or

find a better GI doctor.

Subject: Esophageal Spasms!

Hello Group!

What does everyone do when they have Esophageal Spasms after they've had a HM?

It's got to be caffeine free.  Sipping on a coke, coffee, or tea makes it

worse.

I tried everything from Nitro tabs, valium, verapamil, nifedipine, to sipping

luke warm water, ginger ale, and hot water bottles.

If I call my GI, he'll tell me that I had an incomplete myotomy and I need a 2nd

Surgery.

I can tell you right now that I will not have a second surgery until I'm down to

100 lbs.

Frustrated and in pain,

Lindell

This isn't from personal experience, as my spasms went before the active

Achalasia started, but there seems to be fairly good response here to a low dose

of Paxil (before anything happens, not after). . . .

achalasia/msearch?query=paxil+spasms & submit\

=Search & charset=UTF-8

This one especially:

achalasia/message/62720

Good luck and bon courage!

Hi Lindell,

I always have water on hand and that works most of the time. If it doesn't, I

then chew a Gaviscon and wash it down with water.

I have just come from the emergency room,, but this time is was for myself not

my son who had a heller with a dor 3 years ago on the 11th of this month. I

suffer from gerd and last nights one was a dozy. I am saying this because the ER

doctor gave me Maalox with 2% lidocaine mixed in it. 30ml Maalox and 5 ml

lidocaide, 2 minutes later the pain was completely gone. I too have given my son

every know drug and liquid ( hot, cold, tepid, water, gatorade ext). Could this

combination work for spasms too, I wonder. As luck would have it I just happen

to have 2% lidocaine viscous st home. The next time my son has a spasm I will

try this cocktail and see what if it is effective. Maybe, just maybe. Has anyone

tried this combo, if so what was your experience? ...angela

So sorry you're having this problem post HM!  I haven't had mine yet, but have

found that Donnatal helps if I get to it quickly. Since I can't swallow at all

with spasms, I just let it melt sublingualy and in most cases it brings

relief.

I hope you find your remedy quickly - and a doc that will help!

Hey Lindell!

I do have a recommendation. I was having spasms that were INCREDIBLY painful.

They would take me down for up to 36 hours. I would cry and cry, and nothing

would help. Doctors had tried me on EVERYTHING it seems, and I had almost

completely lost hope.

THANK GOD, I ended up asking my GI doctor for something that would just knock me

out during the episodes, so I wouldn't just have to suffer.

He wrote me phenergan suppositories....my life will never be the same.

These have been a MIRACLE for me since this past October, no joke. They do have

a laxitive effect, and they put me to sleep for 2-4 hours, but then I'm fine!

There have also been times where the suppository JUST stopped the spasms and

didn't put me to sleep, though.

Now, if I get hit with an episode in the morning before work, I only have to

miss HALF a day of work, as opposed to an entire day (very important to me to be

able to go to work).

I definitely suggest giving these a try if the spasms are debilitating for you

like they were for me!

I agree with Kim, but I take Donnatol at least 4 times a day just to keep the

spasms from happening and they still happen.  If real bad then a GI Cocktail.

Warm to hot water also helps.

Good luck

That is known as a GI Cocktail and it is the most awesome thing when nothing

When you talk about spasms, are you referring to a sharp pain in your chest

like heartburn, that for me at times can be so severe that I just want to

curl up in the fetal position and cry out in pain. The first few times I

have had them I have thought it was an acid reflux attack but no matter

what I have tried in the antiacid realm never takes the pain away. So I

discovered the other day that eating a cup of yogurt help to subside the

pain. Not quite sure why yogurt works for me but I am glad I finally have

found something that helps. Sometimes I have to couple the yogurt with a

hot shower before the pain subsides. Has anyone else tried a hot shower or

yogurt?

Thanks! I have recently been correctly diagnosed with Achalasia and

preparing for HM with a Nissen Fundoplication surgery in April. For 4

years I suffered with this and the doctors kept telling me it was GERD

and trying me every acid reflux medication under the sun but they all made

me feel worse. I sure hope the HM relieves the insanity of what my life

has become and I can get back to a normal life again.

Thanks! Geoff

Geoffrey, that is exactly what we call spasms and they are painful.  The pain

is NCCP (Non-cardiac chest pain).  For me they radiate up into my neck and arms

and jaws.  I have a pain tablet I can take as well as Donnatol (anti-spasm) and

even Anti-acid.  They help, but you just have to figure out what works for

you.

Before my HM surgery I had esophageal spasms for almost two years. What worked

for me was eating apple always get rid of pain right away. So I always kept

apple(s) in my car, office, at bed side or even in my jacket when I go out ...

I have been having wicked spasms these last few weeks. I know it is stress.

I can usually chug water and have it work, but if I am really stressy NOTHING

gets through the LES so I end up chugging it to settle the spasms and regurging

the water once it warms. Did this already once today.

I am very interested in the malox and lidocaine. We always called that a pink

lady at work. I think I might look in to this to see if it would work.

Happy vday everyone!

Everyone,

I just had a spasm - one of those that comes on strong and fast. I thought I was

going to be down for several hours at least. Then I remembered my mom left me

some paregoric to try. I took about 1/2 tsp. and let it swish in my mouth before

attempting to swallow (VERY hard for me to swallow anything with spasm). All I

can say is my spasm was OVER in less than 10 minutes! I hope this is the answer

- I do know it's hard to get now in the U.S., but I WILL find a way if needed.

Just want to share this in hopes it can help some of you all.

Don't think he enjoyed it, but he was thrilled with the results. Do any of u A

folks have issues with food texture? Every since Dakota was a little guy seems

he always had these food texture issues. The most picky eater I have ever seen.

He will also develop randomly what has been called a geographical tongue, it

comes and goes. I have heard some of these symptoms can be associated with

asbergers. Though the texture and tongue thing seem to be the only similarity.

Just wondering?

Well, I think I am going to have to find a new solution for resolving my

spasms. Yesterday morning, I had a major episode that lasted for 4+ hours.

Was so strong that I became very weak and could barely stand up. Tried

lukewarm water and it did help lessen the pain but it just would not go

away. The end result is that before this episode I was still able to eat

solid foods, well now that seems to be a thing I use to be able to do.

Looks like I may be on a liquid diet until after surgery in April. I am

going to look into trying all of your liquid suggestions and see what

works. BTW - I could accept losing 100 lbs. to get down to 250 lbs. at one

time I was close to 500 lbs. over 5 years ago, today just dropped below 350

lbs. goal is 225 lbs. I am a 6' tall muscular man so 225 is a good weight

for my build.

Geof, I hope you do find a solution to the spasms. My memory of them about

equals hell on earth.

But as for the not being able to do solid foods. . . . You need to know, that

first the solids go, and *then* the liquids go. You need to get VERY CLEAR on

the fact that Achalasia is not some new wonder diet. The calorie deficit is NOT

a healthy one: it's an across the board famine. I talked to some adult

survivors of China's last " famine " (The Three Hard Years -- 1956 - 1959) when I

lived there, and there are possible life-long problems caused by a period of

starvation or near-starvation. Google. Once the liquids go, it's a *very* short

period before you are in serious trouble.

You need to tell your doctor NOW about the change. Get your electrolytes mapped

now, and monitor them. And you need to take especially good care of yourself.

You are simply in danger.

Good luck, and bon courage.

That is known as a GI Cocktail and it is the most awesome thing when nothing

else will work.  I have been using it for years.  I had my myotomy in 1999.

Has anyone

tried this combo, if so what was your experience? ...angela

Re: Esophageal Spasms!

Hi Lindell,

I always have water on hand and that works most of the time. If it doesn't, I

then chew a Gaviscon and wash it down with water.

Geoffrey,

About 5 years ago my previous GI diagnosed me with Acid reflux then last June

GERD. It turns out I have neither as confirmed with my last dilation at Froedert

Hospital. My GI then wanted me to continue acid reflux medicine and everything

would be fine.

So I no longer try and take antacids as they weren't working for my chest pain -

now I know why because I didn't have that. I do eat yogurt but not enough. I

will try that daily and see if that helps.

Thanks

They help, but you just have to figure out what works for

you.
