Guest guest
For me mine only work for a day I have had 8 dilations Sent via BlackBerry by AT & T Dilation questions Does it hurt after due to muscles being ripped apart? Presuming it works initially, over what time frame does it stop working? Does it work well one day then not the next day or the next meal. Does it stop working gradually over day, weeks, months or years? I know everyone is different, but I would like to know. Curious to hear about other peoples experiences. Guest guest
Naturally the answers you receive to your excellent question about experience with dilatations can only give you a sampling of what could happen, yet have nothing to do with you.  You asked if it hurt. Back in 1983, it was the worst torture in the world having the muscle torn apart, since the doctors did not believe in using anesthesia (though there was no reason I can recall for their using this approach, but is was the same over 6 years and 5 dilatations and 2 different hospitals). From what I understand, it is much kinder and gentler these days.  My first dilatation worked for a day. Each of the followups worked for several years. The doctor's techniques are crucial, so the more experience, the better.  In my case the dilatations gradually stopped working.  It also seems as if a dilatation performed after an HM might work " differently " than one does before an HM. My last dilatation was done when I was in a lot of trouble 15 years after my HM. 5 years after that dilatation (this time done while asleep), I continue to thrive. ________________________________ From: lindsayaus <lindsay_kite@...> achalasia Sent: Monday, February 20, 2012 9:16 PM Subject: Dilation questions  Does it hurt after due to muscles being ripped apart? Guest guest
How treatment is going to effect different people seems to be like buying a lottery ticket....some will win and some wont! I know that if if mine works, there is no guarantee for how long....that's the worst part I think. I want to travel with my family (overseas) and not sure how that will work if my dilation suddenly stopped working (presuming it works initially). I wouldn't have one done if they didn't knock me out first. > > Naturally the answers you receive to your excellent question about experience with dilatations can only give you a sampling of what could happen, yet have nothing to do with you. >  > You asked if it hurt. Hi, , I had a pneumatic dilitation at the University of Southern California in 2008 with a 30 mm balloon, and four years later I'm continuing to eat well. The doctor is Dr. Kline, very experienced with achalasia patients. You asked about pain....I had some NCCP's for a few days after the dilatation. Otherwise no pain. Sending you all good wishes, Love in San Diego
Guest guest
Hi, this is Eva from Chicagoland. I have not posted for quite some time. Been meaning to write. I had a dilation done 4-22-10 and have been doing really well. About 6 weeks prior to the dilation I started see a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doc because I had lost 50 lbs and had no energy, could not keep food or liquid down. My MD via blood tests found that I was NOT anemic although I looked like it. The TCM doc examined me and found me to be totally depleted in energy, with too much heat (inflamation in allopathic terms) and dried out. So I started on vegetable soups pureed with a little meat and Chinese herbs and oils infused with herbs that I rubbed on my chest and joints. And I had some acupuncture too. Soon after following this, I started to be able to keep my food down and the spasms subsided even before the dilation. But the dilation definitely helped in getting the food down. Last year there was a definite improvement in my esophagus when I did the barium study. Rarely do I have any symptoms (only recent symptons I had last month one time was the food came up once and I waited and relaxed and I was fine)- and I don't always drink water to get the food down. I drink it as a habit and to stay hydrated. The herbs really help with spasms and I don't take the same ones all the time and I take a lot less now than last year. I can eat just about anything if I want to. I wanted to write something encouraging. By the way, the dilation was not painful. I was out. And I had pain only a day or two after from spasms while I was off the herbs. I have not had any pain since. Guest guest
Thanks , it's nice to hear that some last for years! I was awake for ages last night with NCCP anyway! Always hits around 4.30am on the nights I get it. I got a call this morning telling me I am booked in for next Tuesday Feb 28th to have mine done. Will be crossing all my fingers and toes! > > > > Does it hurt after due to muscles being ripped apart? > > > > Presuming it works initially, over what time frame does it stop > working?
