Sitting in ER

About to have a zillion tubes of blood drawn. Getting an IV, and they are

hunting down my GI.

Checking electrolytes and everything else under the sun. I asked my gp to do

this a week ago so at least now I will know where I stand. ;)

So 3L of fluid. Bloods weren't too shabby. I should be having a small dilation

next week to tide me over. I declined the heart meds as I am newly out on my own

with my boys and don't need unwanted side effects. ;)

ER doc was very curious about achalasia. :) now I can nap before the shortest

kid gets home!!

Owie! Jenn. Smart girl to get to ER in the early a.m.! (I waited ten hours

'cause I went at noon -- asked them *when* would be a GOOD time to show up, and

they said between four and seven in the morning. . . . ). Also looks like you

cotched it early and, again, congratulations! (I was admitted to the cardiac

unit, and spent five days there. . . . )

About the " small dilation to tide you over " -- sounds like a 15 or 20mm done

during an endoscopy. My sense from reading here (as well as my personal

experience) is that they're VERY ineffective (mine lasted about three days).

What saved my butt was the crock pot coupled with the blender. Imagine your

stomach opening is about 4mm (about the sized of a pea), and cook for that.

Make SURE you are getting lotsa protein!! Chicken, crockpotted, actually makes

a delicious pate (wit' a bit o salt and pepper), which washes down well with any

liquid.

AND please let your SURGEON know what's happening: they're way less willing to

" wait and see " if they know. GIs will sit on their dimes virtually *forever*!!

Hang in there, Luv!

The problem is that I can't have surgery for another 6 weeks. Custody issues and

some things need to be in place before I can have surgery.

Understand, lol! By the time I met with the surgeon, he was ready to do me the

next day. But I have pets, and my kid was coming (leaving wife and children for

four or five days) AND it was just before Christmas, lol! What kind of Oma

kidnaps Daddy just before Christmas? So I scheduled it two days after. But by

then I KNEW how to keep things down. Or at least to eat enough that SOME stuff

went on through. Was still regurging about 80% of what went in.

As for the StreSsssssSsssssS, google " the relaxation response " ~~ cheap and

free, and REALLY does work.

Meanwhile, know our prayers, good wishes, and great vibes are with you!

Hope you get some relief Jenn.

It's funny how we are dealing with something quite aweful, but we wait so we can

schedule it it around our family and special occasions like Christmas!

I delayed my HM so I could be home when my 18 year old finished school. I

didn't want to disrupt his exam time. Then I wanted it done well before

Christmas.

Looking at my video manometry, I only have about 4mm or less to get food

through....and I have had my HM!!! As each day goes on, I am going more and

more to just liquid!

Meanwhile, all the doctors keep eating their regular meals without really caring

about us trying to just live!

It would be interesting to know if this 'trait " of putting ourselves last to

accomodate the schedules of all those around us is common for Achalasians. I've

been putting mine off for months - job expectations, family issues, pet

illness...never seems to be the right time!

Good luck to you Jenn. In the meantime try to keep the stress down (along with

some food) :-)

Hi ,

Sometimes I lack the perception to tell whether or not a person is joking

regarding a serious matter (your talking about " all the doctors keep eating

their regular meals without really caring about us trying to live.)  Besides, I

like my doctors to be well fed so that when they operate or talk to me they are

paying attention to me and not thinking about where their next meal is coming

from.  ;-)

Now that your problem has been identified as to having a mere 4mm or less to get

food through, your doctors can begin to consider just what they are going to do

about it.

Though it would be somewhat presumptuous for me to make a suggestion, I won't

let that stop me from doing so.

I really think that what you need is a dilatation as a followup to your HM, as

an " adjustment " to it, if you will.  I think that, in the hands of someone who

is competent (and not hungry), there is little downside risk, and minimum stress

on your body. I would not recommend another surgery until you can determine if a

dilatation might correct what the HM did not succeed at doing.

In the meantime, ask those doctors to have a meal with you and don't let them

get up and leave until you are finished eating!

YOU ARE GOING TO GET BETTER!!!!!!!

Thanks .

I was sort of joking but also sort of serious about doctors eating, because they

are not in our shoes.

Monday is the day I am hanging out for to see my surgeon. I wonder if the bulge

is going to be an issue. It's kind of like a pouch on the side of the E which

may never empty....ever!!!

@ and Lindsey

I absolutely agree.  I do not like a doctor willing to cut on me at the drop of

a hat.  I want them to be sure.  My HM has been good since 1999 and I have the

adjustment dilation about one each year.  Yes I still deal with spasms, but

donnatol (anti-spasm) and the GI Cocktail are my best friends.......  You will

survive.  I have since being diagnoised in 1978

and I am not giving in yet.........

Best Regards

Sharon

Dec 27 ~~ It *did* work. The ER experience was how I got diagnosed in the first

place -- that was Sept/Oct. I just had a quesadilla for dinner. Forgot even to

add liquids, and it stayed put! (yay) I think maybe I'm not quite as " opened "

as some. But then I don't deal with heartburn/acid reflux either, so. . . .

I'd rather have to be a bit careful, than take PPIs for the rest of my life.

I dont have reflux either. And no fundo. B u t. ... After celebrating valentines

so wonderfully , friends took DH and me out for dinner last night to a wonderful

Italian fine dining experience. Was for my bday so friend knew I love Italian.

Well. DH said you better not eat that bread(did I listen?)it had the most

wonderful pesto stuff to go on. I should have just indulged in the pesto. Wo

the bread. Dumb dumb. SO you know how I said I had not been able to regurge

after the myotomy? Found out I can. I guess I must have packed it full. Was all

blocked. But that's what I get for piggy eating. But seems fine today so far.

Hope I learned my lesson!

You will. Learn. Eventually. Poor baby. Pesto on s'ghetti is *excellent* ~~

Don't know about you, but my eyes have gotten ahead of my tummy for my whole

life. Got taken to Yellowstone with my cousins by my favorite uncle when I was

seven or eight. And ran into my first cafeteria. . . . At some point my uncle

suggested I might have a bit too much on my tray. . . Oh, no, this is fine! It

wasn't. I nearly killed myself trying to finish everything before finally

giving up. I *did* learn, lol! Don't know howcum learning good always *hurts*.
