Guest guest
Kim, I'd think that " stuck food " if it exists would be part of the study, lol! I didn't have a food bolus despite have eaten 1/2 of a roast beef sandwich while in the ER waiting room (regurged before they got to me, lol!). But it seems that it's info they could use if it's there. On the other hand, less to regurge if the added burden of the barium makes you do so (did me). Funny, I'd been avoiding a barium swallow for a couple of years -- and it turned out to be the easiest of the tests. Make sure you get them to show you the scope (they can just swing it around), it's fascinating! Have fun! xox, > > Hi everyone, I have a scheduled appointment for a barium swallow this week. I know there is typically no prep needed, but considering our " A " , is there any reason to forego solid food prior to the prep? Wondering if " stuck " food in the E could impact the study - or the barium from flowing where it's supposed to. > Maybe I'm thinking about this too much, but would appreciate any feedback. > > Consult next Thursday with the surgeon for an HM...finally. > > Thanks, > Kim > >
Guest guest
Thanks , although not sure it's going to be fun! Last one I had they actually expected me to lie down and swallow the stuff - NOTHING can get down in that position!  I also recall barium " experiences " for the following couple of days.... Some of the barium mixes are less of a problem. But if you have the one that likes to form a brick watch out! notan
Guest guest
Before your test it is a requirement that your esophagus be as cleaned out as possible. Some, including myself, go on a liquid diet up to 24 hours before the test with the intention of having the " E " as clean as possible for the doctors to get an accurate read of what your " E " looks like. Having food in there not only can distort the photo, but may block the barium from flowing thru, which can result in more serious problems, such as aspiration.  Some people have reported that when they are are lying down during the test the barium comes back up. Now picture what might happen if you have food sitting there too.  " Stuck " food will impact the study, and as you said, it might distort the flow of the barium.  Clean yourself up as you would if you were having a colonoscopy! ;-(  ________________________________ From: Leda Mae <leda444@...> " achalasia " <achalasia > Sent: Tuesday, March 6, 2012 1:57 PM Subject: Barium swallow - prep?  Hi everyone, I have a scheduled appointment for a barium swallow this week. Guest guest
Laffin. Not at you, at me: I'm old enough to remember getting my feet fluoroscoped at the shoe store. I was as fascinated at four with my toe bones inside the shoes as I was at 71 at my bird's beak. What can I say. . . . Bon courage! > > > > Hi everyone, I have a scheduled appointment for a barium swallow this week. Guest guest
My last swallow (3 weeks ago) I was required to be on clear fluids for at least 48 hours prior to my study.  Despite that, I still had food present and it certainly impacted the study.  If your GI requests that you be on clear fluids, I'd follow those directions, as you want as clear a picture as possible.  And as much as it sucks trying to suck back that barium while laying flat, it's a good indication for the radiologist to see how things are moving.  Just let them know prior that you might have troubles, so that they can be prepared for anything that might come back up kim in canada ________________________________ From: RICHARD FRIEDMAN <cynmark24@...> " achalasia " <achalasia > Sent: Tuesday, March 6, 2012 6:31 PM Subject: Re: Barium swallow - prep?  Before your test it is a requirement that your esophagus be as cleaned out as possible.
