Hi ,  Many of us have been in this situation, prior to surgery I was

starving all the time, nothing really works other than trying liquid

supplements, eating frequently those small protions that you  can possibly get

down.  I lived on tons of peanut butter, not always the best thing but it did

give me some energy.  Feeling tired is part of this disorder.  I know you are

doing all you can, hang in there and I hope very soon you will get some

relief.

Subject: Tips for maintaining energy?

My diet at the moment is pretty much yogurt, soup, Sustagen (like Ensure),

gelati/icecream and chocolate.

I can feel my energy level dropping and although I don't regurge, I can't seem

to get enough into me. I feel full all the time even though I hardly eat or

drink anything.

Anyone have any great suggestions for energy in a liquid?

Sustagen had been my staple supply of nutrients now for 7 months. How long can

anyone live on this stuff I wonder?

, Ensure and Boost are primarily sugar and oil. A bit of whey and a

vitamin. Surely we can do better for ourselves than that, lol! You can

purchase whey at a healthfood store. And butter is better for you than rapeseed

oil (called Canola here). Crockpot. Chicken. Blender. Wonderful what one can

do just starting there. And I'll bet the vitamins they use are nothing like top

of the line. . . Add onions, garlic, other veggies, and whey. Much better for

you, and tastes better, too, lol! Your body *needs* protein. I wish I'd

realized what was happening to me before my hair started to fall out. But by

the time I noticed, and got my blender out, it was pretty much too late. The

good part is that I'll live. And there was a long time in there where I really

wasn't sure I'd make it. Love and luck, and get to work: it's *your* life.

I will not blend meat or chicken....I can't eat food like that! I only puree

fruit and vegetables.

Here are some thoughts as I reflect back to " those days " , which were torture for

me as surely they are for you and others who are still suffering and not able to

eat a decent meal.  I could eat " shrimp " for some reason that kinda thing

wasn't too bad, and also always ate sushi, but had to skip lots of the rice as

it would NOT go down.  Noodles work better than potatoes, lots of soups and

crispy things like toasted bread or fried tortilla's.  Always small portions, I

would take a few bites literally every hour on some days!!!  The higher the

fat, the longer it will sustain you.

Also, and I don't know if this would help everyone, but it did help me near the

end when my LES seemed to stay shut...I would drink some alcohol before meals

and it did seem to relax my LES and me!!!!  Worked sometimes!  I was never a

big drinker, nor did I like wine that much, but a mixed drink worked better for

me.

The circle of food gets smaller and smaller when you have achalsia, this is

something that you need to pound into your doc's head, it just amazes me that we

suffer so much and there seems such little understanding of this disorder.

Thinking of you!

Torture is right! Why don't the doc's understand this?

My problem is that every time I have something done (HM or dilation) I go

backwards and have even more trouble swallowing. At the moment I can eat far

less than before the HM or dilation....that's crazy!!!

Perhaps I shouldn't have had anything done!

I am wondering if the doc's really know what they are doing, or are they just

out to make lots of money and make us suffer!!

not counting today I have 9 days to go. I have given up on anything solid.

thick liquids even me me spasm and retch. I use a whey protein powder to

make a drink but I feel the shakes once again cause a lot of nausea. I am

trying out the zofran now to see if we can decrease nausea and therefore

increase fluids.

I spent most of last night retching even with Zofran on board. I was

hydrated 2 days ago and that is gone.

I will be searching messages post op for food ideas as I want to eat slowly

to reduce adhesions.

Ready to be finished this phase.

It's not fair Jenn that we are all made to wait while we are slowly tortured! I

think I read earlier that you are still working....that's amazing! You must be

very strong.

Hoping your days go quick to get some relief!

, I'm so sorry you're still struggling. Haven't been reading posts daily

- I'm moving and that's proven to be a huge project (not to mention stressful).

I take a liquid supplement called G3 - It gives me energy, and all the nutrients

I don't get because I can't eat fruits and veggies. At least not in the

quantities we're supposed to to get our nutrients. It's pleasant tasting and not

acidic so it doesn't bother my E.  The primary ingredient is from the GAC

superfruit from SE Asia - used there for healing purposes. Has very high

quantities of vitamins and other nutrients. You can read about it on this link -

if you're interested I can help you get it. But it 's been my salvation through

all this. One of the other benefits is that is reduces inflammation and improves

our immune response - pretty important for A:

Since I've been so busy moving I haven't read the posts daily - what's the next

step with your doctor? Is there something he plans to do to correct whatever is

going on?  I really do hope this clears up for you.

Hi Kim,

My surgeon has told me to get a second opinion before rushing back into surgery,

so I am off on Thursday to meet with another GI specialist.

I will look into the G3 thing.

Good luck.  My surgery is scheduled for the 24th - he's supposed to be very

good (fingers crossed) with good outcomes. If this proves to be the case, you're

welcome to stay with me and check him out. Dan at Emory (Atlanta)

Linsday ~~ It's called Pâté, and has a long and honored place in Western

Cuisine. . . . Hot dogs, sausage, and liverwurst are all Pâtés. As is pâté de

foie gras; mousse de foie gras (both must contain 50% or more foie gras);

parfait de foie gras. Long and honorable history, indeed.

From wiki:

Pâté is a mixture of cooked ground meat and fat minced into a spreadable paste.

Common additions include vegetables, herbs, spices, and either wine or cognac,

armagnac or brandy.

Up to you.

Hi Kim

Back in Nov. 2011 saw Dr Oz with the scanner. Really dont believe it, but if it

helps use it. Very expensive exotic drinks have sometimes been called a scam.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX4oxxGWi_8

I use Pomegranate juice which I can get at Costco for $8. It seems comparable

to G3. Can not find just what G3 has " Chinese Lycium fruit, Siberian Pineapple,

and Cili fruit " in it relative to Pomegranate juice as referenced below.

Obviously they keep it a secret so they can charge the outragious prices. Also I

have a hard time in believing in free radicals and antioxidants. Maybe I need

unbiased info on this, will look into

this.

Hi Ray,

Yes, I understand  your skepticism. But there is a ton of clinical data -

double blind studies, that validate the product. I have a medical background and

researched it pretty thoroughly before I took it. I agree there are many

products that don't own up to the claims, however this one absolutely does. The

scanner you saw validates the uptake by the cells. It was developed by NIH and U

of Utah - still used in lutein and zeaxanthin studies for prevention of macular

degeneration - most recently at U of Chicago. The data is there - in reams.

Happy to share it if you're interested.

The products you buy off the shelf are inferior quality - you don't know how the

contents were grown, harvested, when they were harvested, - basically no quality

controls. G3 is manufactured from the source with very strict quality controls -

the only supplements that are manufactured to pharma grade standards. So buying

juice from costco or anywhere else won't give you the same benefit. It would

also be worthwhile to look at what other additives are in the product that you

don't want to be taking.

Free radicals are the elements that attack our cells and cause cancer and other

diseases. Antioxidants form an armor around the cells and prevent free radical

damage. This is sound science that's been known for years. I could go on more

about this, but you're a smart guy from what I've been reading. The data is

there and accepted by top scientists and medical communities.

Hi

This is what I buy from Costco, it is from Caifornia and not from Asia. I live

in Calif so trust the source. I am sure both products would be helpful.

nutrients I don't get because I can't eat fruits and veggies. At least not in

the quantities we're supposed to to get our nutrients. It's pleasant tasting and

not acidic so it doesn't bother my E.

What about oatmeal, cream of wheat ( one of my new forced faves!) or grits,

scrambled eggs, cottage cheese? You can't eat any of that???

Subject: Tips for maintaining energy?

My diet at the moment is pretty much yogurt, soup, Sustagen (like Ensure),

gelati/icecream and chocolate.

I can feel my energy level dropping and although I don't regurge, I can't seem

to get enough into me. I feel full all the time even though I hardly eat or

drink anything.

Anyone have any great suggestions for energy in a liquid?

Hello Kim and ,

Those are good choices. Cream of wheat used to be my favorite. For energy and

weight gain, I also used to make shakes from Hagaen-Daz, and homemade chocolate

sauce.

One problem is liquids and viscous mixtures seem to require extra effort to get

down. At times, The LES just doesn't seem to open. The sensation, when it is

forced open, feels like the last dilation when the largest dilator painfully

ripped open the LES. It was like having having your innerds torn apart, or

having some high-caliber projectile rip through your chest cavity. For pain, it

was the worst imaginable - especially when sustaining your nutrient needs is

paramount.

Another issue to maintaining energy is having an appetite. it's difficult to

force food down if you don't have an appetite. I never really felt enough

energy, ate enough or weighed normally until the pain was addressed.

Don't give up. There are treatments available.

I was eating weetbix for breakfast but stopped because of bloating. I hadn't

had Weetbix for about 15 years because of that. I only went back to it because

it was the only cereal I could eat at the moment. I decided to cut it out

though. Eggs won't go down and I don't like cottage cheese, which I why I stick

to the handful of foods I know go down.

Today is the day I go for my second opinion.

Don't know about , but the ONLY thing on that list that I could eat,

pre-Heller would have been cream of wheat/grits. Once I was able to visualize

the size of the opening (*when* it was 'open') as smaller than the size of a

pea, it helped to figure out what would slide through. Ironically, over cooked

ramen noodles worked fine. Cottage cheese (which I love), not a chance. Rice

wouldn't because it would clump. But soda crackers which dissolve to mush,

easy. Therefore, crackers with pate and cheese were a good choice. Cheese, by

itself, (again, the stick together factor) wouldn't work at all. Of course,

this all presupposes very good chewing, and lots of liquid!

Glad so glad those days are gone for now.

I was eating Ritz crackers which melt in the mouth for a while. I was have

these with home made salmon dip, but I can't even get these down over the last 2

weeks.

I thought I wouldn't either but I do chicken shredded on different things -

quesadillas, tacos and fettucine alfredo, You can do a lot with really ground,

ground beef. You need to experiment. Things are different for all of us but you

have to be willing to try things you normally wouldn't want to eat to stay

healthy. I generally do better with some type of sauce or gravy to keep things

smoother. I cut up my food like I did when my duaghter was two but I can get

enough down to keep me healthy enough. this isn't where I thought I would be

sitting but if I don't try different things , I lose the motivation to eat too.

The diet gets frustrating - what works one day won't necessarily work the next.

A lot of this is trial and error.

I can so symphatize with you because I couldn't hold anything down for almost

four months before they diagnosed me. Food started to get stuck in my esophagus

only 2 months before that, and it all went downhill. I tried a lot of things too

but keeping your strength is key and like said, you need protein!!

Keep your chin up and your mind open!

I will not blend meat or chicken....I can't eat food like that! I only puree

fruit and vegetables.
