Hi Suzanne,

I had my HM in Nov but still have remained sleeping on 3 pillows (2 for head and

1 as a little wedge). It's more comfortable than using a wedge.

Good luck with your surgery. What country do you live in?

(Australia)

am new to Achalasia. I only have noticed the symptons for about a year ago. I

just found out two month ago that I have Achalasia. I am having the surgery on

April 18 2012. Does anyone know if after the surgery if I will I be able to

sleep with out sitting up?

I live in the United States.  I am in a town just out side of ville,

Florida.  I am lucky the Mayo Hospital in ville has over 200 patients a

year with Achalasia.  My doctor has performed HM for almost 17 years.  I feel

I am good hands.  Pray for me and I will let everyone know how it went.

Welcome Suzanne,

I had achalasia for a very long time before finally getting help.  I slept

propped up on two pillows for over 22yrs because of the nightime chokking and

regurg.  After my HM which was done in the summer of 2010, I purchased a wedge

pillow for the first couple of months out of fear of messing up my surgery.  I

noticed that after surgery, there was no regurg at all, so I tried sleeping on

just one pillow and now I have no problems.  We are each different, so I am

hoping that your surgery will give you great results also.

It's important to make sure that you have an experienced surgeon that deals with

achalasia and has done many HM with good success, sounds like you have found

one.

Welcome to the group.

Hopefully you will be able to sleep as flat as you like but take it in

steps. Many of us went from sleeping on piles of pillows to sleeping

flat but there was a report from the wife of a person who went right to

sleeping flat soon after coming home from the surgery and died later

from complications from aspiration while sleeping. See:

I can sleep flat and often do when napping on the sofa but I keep my bed

a little elevated just in case. I used to have it much more elevated

before the surgery. Even with that I was using a pile of pillows and

still had trouble every night. Now I only have problems if I eat right

before sleeping.
