Guest guest
Wow! It sounds like the ER really gave you Cadillac care! In my last visit to the ER, a physician dismissed achalasia as being merely a " swallowing disorder. " <rolls eyes> Yes, I've had pain in the chest, back, shoulders, jaw. I'm glad others admit to it. One pain management doc did prescribe Gabapentin, which wasn't effective. My PCP also tried it along with Nifedipine, and many other meds, with varying results. Curiously my GI seems to enjoy to comment on how much worse my achalasia gets without doing anything about it ( " we don't do meds here " ). Can't say I blame him after the DEA had its War on Doctors witch-hunt in town. One caveat about Percocet: the FDA has strongly suggesting against chronic use of Percocet and Vicodin due their NSAID content causing liver toxicity and severe gastroesophageal ulcerations. There are much safer analgesics, like MSIR - which in liquid formulation is easier to ingest than pills and won't cause damage to your GI tract. Usually the combination of a long-acting and short-acting analgesic produce positive outcomes for achalasia pain symptoms. Steve > > Hi everyone! Haven't posted in a while but read daily. Had my HM with fundo Nov 2008, and am much better, still occasional issues but tolerable. Last week i suddenly developed a gnawing pain in my jaw, figured maybe grinding teeth withut realizing. The pain then progressed to the whole right side of my face to my ear, with pain in my teeth. I have never had a cavity so i assumed maybe that was it or an abscessed tooth. Starting taking anti-biotics to be safe just in case. By Sunday pain was so severe i went to ER. BP was 195/100! had a CT which was normal. Got preliminary dignosis of Trigeminal Neuralgia. Saw Neurologist which agreed. Bloodwork done to rule out MS, Lyme, auto-immune disorders. MRI tomorrow. On regimen of gabapentin, percocet for breakthrough pain and they want me to start Baclofen.I remember reading that with Achalsia the nerves in the esophogus " die " . Does anyone think there is a potential link here? Hope all my fellow achalasians are ok. Thanks >

Guest guest
This is interesting. I have this intense pressure only on the left side of my face, head with a stabbing, burning sensation around one eye, which persists constantly. Sometimes I get shooting pains in the neck, shoulders and extremities. One finger has gone permanenetly numb. Haven't slept at all for 4 1/2 months. Even the simplest life functions have become almost impossible. These symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia have exacerbated many years after I had stable pain management for achalasia NCCP and spasms. My blood pressure also has skyrocketed from a consistent, normal baseline to stage II hypertension. This dramatic rise in blood pressure is one indication of untreated or poorly managed pain. With this constant pain, it's very difficult not to get angry. Steve > > Several years ago I met a women who had " Trigeminal Neuralgia " , I'm trying to stir my memory about what she told me. I remember she was in horrible pain and she did alot of research on the matter and found a specialist surgeon that did surgery on her and it helped. Seems like the surgery stripped the nerve so that it stopped the pain. My husband suffered with a different type of neuralgia for many years and finding the right surgeon took a long time. >  > Would this type of nerve pain come from dental work??? I am very sorry that you are going through this and achalasia both together, but I don't think they are related. If your situation does not get better, start researching a specialist who can do surgery, but again MAKE SURE they are the best of the best and then make decisions. >  > Your in my thoughts!  >  > Julee in Oregon > > > ________________________________ > From: Kim <kimellenbailey@...> > " achalasia " <achalasia > > Sent: Friday, April 13, 2012 8:32 AM > Subject: Re: Achalasia link to Trigeminal Neuralgia? > > > >  > > OMG!! Guest guest
> Would this type of nerve pain come from dental work??? I have a friend whose TN *was* triggered by dental work!! She was about to have the nerve just cut when they, as a final desperate try, sent her to a pain clinic. There they taught her self hypnosis and it worked!! She still has residual sinus pain, but can live with it. and does. Might be something to look into when nothing else works. xox
