I had mine on April 10. I was really shocked when I was able to burp. It's hard

to do but it seems like if I concentrate on it long enough I can.

Is your pain actually spasms?

I'm so sorry to say this but I have suffered from these episodes for the last 20

years since my HM and fundoplication. I know how intensely painful it can be.

If it makes a difference, they have gotten less frequent for me over the years.

Sometimes it helps to force down something carbonated like a soda. This can

bring the trapped air up. You want to belch that air out. I've been known to

drink two or three cans before it works. Also, I have found that Levsin

(hyoscyamine) under the tongue helps. But once the pain turns into retching

spasms the only thing that ever has helped me was butorphanol tartrate nasal

spray. This is a synthetic opiate. I have a new GI and so far he has refused

to prescribe it so I can have it on hand. A small bottle would probably last me

more than a year. I'm going to continue working on it or change doctors.

I hope someone will help us both out with alternatives to the narcotic option.

I agree with the carbonation. I was told NOT to drink carbonated beverages by

the dietician after surgery but I had horrible gas in my belly. Drank some diet

Pepsi, belched so loud and felt SO good. I am thankful I read that here before

:)

I live with a COLD can of COKE at lunch or maybe diet at times. Now just one a

day. The CO2 opens the LES, medical book!

If necessary use a spit up glass, this will bring up the junk that prevents to

food to go through. When I was really bad I would use several cans. Also at

night if I had indigestion I would rush to get a COLD Coke, it is a lot better

than PPI's. In my opinion!!

Dont worry about the sugar and all the bad things that they tell you, just use

it until you can learn how to MANAGE Achalasia. Use diet Coke if you like the

taste, both work fine. Coke or Pepsi in a COLD can both work, just get a drink

with a lot of CO2.

I learned how to force a burp. Mine was 21 yrs ago.

I go to Mayo in the morning for the first step

in finding out what they can do when the HM starts

to fail. If you can try and master the reverse burp

it triggers the real one. I have no idea how to

describe it. It came out of desperation.

For the new person who wants to live 40 more

years, why not more. Think long term future.

I refuse to let A take my life. Support is a great

Reinforcement in this. I've been on my own until

I discovered this very excellent group. I thank

you all for helping me to find ways to get food

down through techniques like gulping and carbonation.

And to whom ever was collecting info on autoimmune

Problems, it has been suggested that this might

be a concern for me. I have often wondered

but was afraid to suggest as GI people can sometimes

be somewhat narrow minded and condescending. Also PCPs. I was

told when I was in my 20s that I had way too many

health problems for my age.

Well, I'm not one to share personal info.

I'm a career soldier (retired) and it violates my indoctrination to

reveal personal info.

Thanks for listening to whom ever is out there

listening.

I need to get to bed as I have to get up at 5 am to get

to mayo in time for my appt.

Wish me luck. All prayers are welcome. I'm to be

ordained next month in interfaith ministry so

all religions, beliefs, and cognitive non believer

thought processes are VERY welcome. I'm

a bit anxious.

Thanks again to all.

Faith,

I just want to wish you well in the morning! It's funny that I have my pre-op

appointment in the morning in La Crosse, and you will be in Rochester. I don't

know your faith, but I am sure my wife and I will be praying for your visit as

well as mine!

Graham,

Why are you taking Stadol? it's a partial opioid agonist-antagonist and not as

effective a pure mu agonist at pain relief. The antagonist portion is most

likely to keep LES pressure high.

BTW: aren't GIs a wonderful bunch with their agendas to decide what they won't

prescribe based on fear and prejudice?

Steve,

It was me that used to take Stadol. I haven't been able to get a refill. I

liked the nasal spray aspect because I didn't have to worry about it coming back

up.

I took it because that's what my doctor prescribed. I can look into other

drugs.

Good for you! I get that real bad sometimes too but after I started having A

symptoms, I rarely belch anymore. Sad to say, but I used to quite frequently

until I started getting the chest pain real bad. That was one of the weirdest

things for me that I noticed before the lack of swallowing started. I couldn't

burp.

I drink 7up when I have gas pain.

Honestly I wish I knew how to force a burp. I think I might choke to death if I

tried. I used to be able to and I had mentioned in my last post I used to be

able to belch. I think I always had an issue with trapped air and always felt I

needed to belch to get rid of that. But I started having NCCP in December on

2010 and at the same time I noticed I was unable to burp anymore. I didn't have

swallowing problems until 6 months later.

Can anyone clarify why most of us are unable to belch anymore? I really don't

understand that. My mom has acid reflux and always tells me " If you just burp

you will feel better " And I can't seem to explain to her why I cannot do that

anymore.

I too have problem bleching.  I did not have problems before my surgery on the

18th of April this year.  What I do to help is I mix a 4 ounch glass of warm

water with 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda.  Try this it may help.

Anything is worth a shot. I have found a lot of trial and error with Achalasia

in general, but overall I am willing to try, just about anything once!!

Thanks

Mostly with achalasia the lower esophagus and the LES are where the main

dysfunctions are and they mainly effect swallowing. Sometimes there are

other dysfunctions such as the UES (upper esophageal sphincter and the

belch reflex. You need that reflex to consistently belch correctly. The

trapped gas may be a trigger for spasms due to the distention of the

esophagus by the gas.

Spasms too can cause trouble with gas. A spasm can have enough pressure

to close of the esophagus and prevent a burp from passing. I think

spasms squeezing the gas is why we sometimes get those squeaky drain

sounds from our throats that seem to have some kind of strange burp

happening.

As always Notan, thank you for explaining this. This continues to be a problem
