Guest guest
You can also blend the sprouts into smoothies with fruits and greens and water. These are very very good and very nutritious. I second the idea of an automatic sprouter: the initial investment is off-putting but once you get it, you only need to rinse once a day, and I do keep a chart of the date I started a bunch, what sprouts they are, and what time of day I started the batch. I find it easiest to rinse and refill the water sometime in the evening. And the sprouts are awesome. Guest guest
Thanks! What automatic sprouter do you both recommend? And I will do the smoothies. Broccoli is best, you say, for health. Any others in that same health category? Maybe alfalfa or quinoa? And for a regular supply, is it best if possible to have two or more sprouters going? Guest guest
I think we both have the Fresh Life automatic sprouter. I only have one, and it replenishes with a large fresh new batch every four days so I don't use anything else. If I were to need a back up, I would use hemp bags since I had very good luck with them, but they do require regular rinsing several times a day. I use a lot of broccoli, and a lot of fenugreek (simply because it makes really good tasty sprouts). I also use the French, Russian, Spicy, and Italian mixes offered by .com in order to get a good variety. I usuallly make my batches half fenugreek and half one of the other five. If you want to keep more going, I think you can start a new batch while one batch is finishing. I haven't done this yet, but I do plan to give it a try. Guest guest
Thank you Joyce, for your kind response, so quickly! It looks like I will work with broccoli, fenugreek, alfalfa, wheat, and rye (I like rye, and they say it is better for me in particular than wheat). At least for starters. The only sprouting I have ever done years ago was alfalfa, but fenugreek intrigues me. I saw the sprouter you mentioned for sale, with an extra level optional. How many levels can it take? One on top, or more than one? And I saw the pad for use with wheat grass (and rye), and plan on using that. Or is it better to use a dedicated wheat grass juicer such as sproutman's, or another one, for wheat & rye. I have a juicer, greenstar, twin screw masticating juicer. But mostly probably will use the vitamix blender i have, unless volume gets to be too much for me. then i plan to juice it. Gradually I may switch to an all-sprout diet, because my health is so bad. I have been in 22 different hospitals within the last 3 years or so, and because my conditions are rare and hard to treat, my own state told me: " This state cannot help you; you need to move to a different state. " Some estimate a 10% chance to live. With God's help, I will live. I am now allergic to milk, egg, tomato, potato, corn, soybean, kidney bean, blueberries, cranberries, peanuts, almonds, filberts, garlic, most shellfish, pork, oats, highly allergic to tobacco, many common chemicals, and many other things. Called multiple chemical sensitivity. As well as many other ailments. The above is only mentioned because maybe I am a good test case to see if sprouts can make a difference in someone's health. The man called sproutman has a story like that. Thank you so much!!! > >> > Hi , the lesson here to all is keep the sprouts cool. Two > > things > >> > that you can do. Guest guest
We both use the FreshLife. Look it up on the Tribest web site. Also you will notice that you can buy an extra barrel to stack them and thats almost like having two machines. Also, you can do more than one sprout at a time on the same tray in the machine. Just make sure that all the seeds you sprout together mature in the same amount of time, ie; broccoli, alfalfa or clover. You can't do lentils and broccoli. There are other examples. Just know how long each sprout takes. Sprout People's web site is the place to check that out. If you can remember to rinse, I can tell you a fast and easy way to do lentils without a machine or sprouter. Hang on before you order the FreshLife, I have an web site where you can buy it wholesale, but its not in front of me just now. I'll send it tomorrow. All of the green sprouts are healthy. The reason I push broccoli is that we all know the studies that have been done that tell us that mature broccoli is good for you. Broccoli sprouts are 50 times more nutritious. ew new here > > Date: Sat, 09 Aug 2008 17:45:46 -0000 > > > > Hi. Guest guest
SproutPeople has a mix called French Garden that I am in love with. Look on their web site for something called HGTV special. You get the French Garden and broccoli seed, plus an Easy Sprout sprouter. I have two of them and keep them busy. ew new here >> > Date: Sat, 09 Aug 2008 17:45:46 -0000 >> > >> > Hi. Guest guest
I'm not sure, , but I don't think you want to be using the vitamix for grasses. From what I have read, they should be juiced; they're not digestible. The other sprouts are fine to blend-- I do them all the time! :~) Thia On Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:58 AM, Schverzhjedzova <ahoovahyah@...>wrote: > I have a juicer, greenstar, twin screw masticating juicer. > But mostly probably will use the vitamix blender i have, unless > volume gets to be too much for me. then i plan to juice it. > -- º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º Quick & Easy Vegan Recipes http://easyraw.blogspot.com/ º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º
Guest guest
Thanks for the tip, Thia! there is such a thing as getting too much roughage in the diet! Do you have any idea how much juice from how much grass sprouts? It may be hard if only a small amount of juice is obtained... and the juicer takes a lot of time to clean, which can get old if done every day. For example, for 1 pint of wheat or rye grass juice per day, how much sprouts would it take (using the greenstar twin screw juicer)? And which sprouter is best for grasses, especially if memory is a factor. the automatic one seems best for my own situation, as the others have suggested. Thanks again, > > > I have a juicer, greenstar, twin screw masticating juicer. > > But mostly probably will use the vitamix blender i have, unless > > volume gets to be too much for me. then i plan to juice it. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > -- > º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º > > Quick & Easy Vegan Recipes > http://easyraw.blogspot.com/ > > º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º > > >
Guest guest
Thanks you so much, Earnest~~~ I think that as my health improves from drinking the sprouts, I may then be able to remember better, and then be more able to remember to rinse sprouts in a timely manner. Probably best to start with to stick to the freshlife automatic one. Who knows, maybe I will again be able to work, and no longer be on disability! That would sure surprise a lot of doctors! Looking forward to your freshlife source. I may end up getting two of them, with the extra layers for each. Thanks again, > > > Hi , the lesson here to all is keep the sprouts cool. Guest guest
, I eat a lot of sprouts by combining them with things like omelets, dumping a bunch in soups at the table, making sandwiches with sprouted German breads, using them as accompaniments to foods at the table. I asked my health adviser (I don't do doctors) how many sprouts I can eat a day, and he said as much as I want as long as they don't constipate me. You might want to check out anything you can find on Ann Wigmore and get her books on sprouting and on wheat grass. Ann Wigmore had a spa in the center of Boston, and she helped a lot of people regain good health. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Wigmore http://chetday.com/wigmore.html http://www.fromsadtoraw.com/Recipes/Rejuvelac.htm And I recommend that you find a copy of her cookbook (non-cookbook) to learn about Rejuvelac. Everything I can find about rejuvelac on line uses wheat berries to make it, but in her book, she suggests rye and other grain seeds. I have made it with rye, and I like the taste. It is supposed to be very good for restoring health. Rejuvelac is a fermented drink. Here is the basic recipe: REJUVELAC 1c wheat berries (organic soft white pastry wheat is best) or other grain seeds like rye 3c spring or filtered water. Rinse wheat, remove floaters. Soak for 48 hrs. Pour off, drink. Add 2c water to the same wheat, this time soak for 24 hrs. Soak 3 times. Use a dark place. Ferment to taste, tart not sour. Use any seed with hull. We can add a bundle of wheatgrass to while fermenting. Variations cause different results. Fermentation is faster in warm weather. -- Joyce Dallas TX IACP 1834 www.dearjubilee.com 2008 ATCA Rescue & Adoption Fundraiser Quilt: http://www.airedalerescue.net/a_day_in_the_life/index.htm
Guest guest
Sprouts have helped a lot of people get healthy. Read the Sproutman's story. The best price on the FreshLife is at www.vitalityplus1.com. They also have a machine called Easy Green Automatic Sprouter. I am not familiar with it, but other people in this group have talked about it. Maybe one of them can chime in and give us the low down. As far as buying two FreshLife machines. How many people are you feeding your sprouts to? The FreshLife turns out a lot of sprouts in one batch. And each barrel has two trays. Two or three days after you start the first batch, you can start a second by lifting out the first tray, inserting the second, scatter the new seeds. Return the tray in progress. When the first tray is finished, the second is half way done. One thing about the FreshLife that you are not told in the instructions is, as soon as you see tails (roots), take off the lid. The sprouts need air and light. Except if your doing mung beans. You don't want them to green up. When doing mung beans the process is different. You will need both trays. The seeds go on the bottom tray. The other tray goes on top on the seeds with some weight on it. I use three rocks about the size of large golf balls. The weight causes the sprouts to push up and it makes the sprouts thicker. A world of difference in the sprouts done this way in a FreshLife sprouter and in a quart jar. ew new here > > > Date: Sat, 09 Aug 2008 17:45:46 -0000 > > > > > > Hi. Guest guest
A pint a day seems like an awful lot of wheatgrass juice, . I have a manual Healthy Juicer. I am sure there are others on this list far more familiar with the grasses, and juicers, than I am. Maybe some of them can answer your questions. Guest guest
I've been looking through Ann Wigmore's Recipes for Longer Life, and I think you would really benefit from having this book. It is available on Amazon.com used books for a good price -- check http://www.amazon.com/Recipes-Longer-Life-Ann-Wigmore/dp/0895291959 It covers all kinds of ways of using sprouts to make juices, dressings, sauces, and more, much more than just the Rejuvelac (which is a worthwhile drink -- but I only like it made of rye). There are many flashier raw cook books out now, but this one is very straightforward, very simple to use, and focuses on healing. -- Joyce Dallas TX IACP 1834 www.dearjubilee.com 2008 ATCA Rescue & Adoption Fundraiser Quilt: http://www.airedalerescue.net/a_day_in_the_life/index.htm
Guest guest
I found a comparison of automatic sprouters: http://www.naturalnews.com/z021475.html It was on the one company's website, but I thought it informative. All of your different comments have been very helpful and are appreciated. So it looks like I may wait just a bit for my money to come in, and then get the more expensive automatic sprouter. My health needs are such that just sprouting to add sprouts to other foods, or to use in sandwiches, will not be enough. I will need to concentrate on the most nutritious ones, mostly juicing to maximize the benefit, but keeping it semi-edible by not for example sprouting only garlic for the juice. Also, just curious: Anybody sprout tomato seed? Did it taste good? Thank you!
Guest guest
, you may want to consider the GoGreen. It produces more than any other one I have seen any info on. The large one is even double that. They also have a comparison chart on their site. It's one I have seriously considered. You can buy their plans and build your own with local parts, or have them build it for you. Take a look: Site main page: http://eatsprouts.com/ pre-built sprouters: http://eatsprouts.com/vitem-spr.html Comparison chart: http://eatsprouts.com/compare.html :~) Thia On Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 1:08 AM, Schverzhjedzova <ahoovahyah@...>wrote: > I found a comparison of automatic sprouters: > > http://www.naturalnews.com/z021475.html > -- º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º Quick & Easy Vegan Recipes http://easyraw.blogspot.com/ º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º
Guest guest
From reading the review of the sprouters on the naturalnews site, it appears that the writer did not use the FreshLife sprouter correctly: you change the water every day, and it does not get dark murky. And it is not as difficult as he says it is to clean it if you clean the water tank every time you change the water. I like the sound of the other one, but the FreshLife is doing a good job for me, and I am not unhappy with it. If it fails, I will deal with the company, but unless it does, I am getting great fresh tasting sprouts from it. If I ever have to replace it, I will look at all the ones available, and make my decision. Guest guest
Altho you can eat the seeds of tomatoes, you cannot eat the plant or sprouts. They are toxic to humans. ew Re: new here Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 05:08:52 -0000 I found a comparison of automatic sprouters: http://www.naturalnews.com/z021475.html It was on the one company's website, but I thought it informative. Guest guest
Thanks Thia! At their site, I found something I was looking for: the amount of sprout space per quantity of wheatgrass juice. Here is wh they said: " One 3 " x13 " tray yields 2-3 ounces of wheatgrass juice – depending on your lighting, temperature (grows faster in summer) and how good your juicer is. The 6 " x13 " tray in the GoGreen Sprouter gives SIX ounces of juice, using just under half a cup of wheat berries (seed). " I like it especially for its quietness. I am disabled and am especially sensitive to sounds. Sometimes I pass out and get another ambulance ride simply by being exposed to certain types of sounds. However, I live in an apartment where I do not have the privilege of hooking anything up to a water line. I would need a unit that is self-contained, without the need to connect to a water line. As far as I could see, the GoGreen unit must be connected to a water line, and so because of that it would not work. I will try to contact them about that to see if there are other possibilities. thank you! > > > I found a comparison of automatic sprouters: > > > > http://www.naturalnews.com/z021475.html > > > > > > > > > -- > º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º > > Quick & Easy Vegan Recipes > http://easyraw.blogspot.com/ > > º¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤ºº¤ø,¸,ø¤º > > >
Guest guest
I have to agree with Joyce. I have been using my FreshLife for three years and am completely happy with it. It sits on the corner or my kitchen sink. There are no hoses hooked up to it. No external clocks. It is not too noisy. Some times I have to check to make sure its running because its so quiet. Every morning I change the water. On day one and two the water goes down the drain. After that it goes in the garden or waters house plants. It uses one gallon of water a day. I rinse the water reservoir daily and wipe it down. At the end of each batch, I wash the machine with soap and water. There is no more work to it than doing dishes. A friend in my garden club introduced me to the FreshLife and she also is very happy with it. About two years ago, hers got too noisy for her and the company fixed it for her. ew Re: Re: new here Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 08:42:26 -0500 From reading the review of the sprouters on the naturalnews site, it appears that the writer did not use the FreshLife sprouter correctly: you change the water every day, and it does not get dark murky. Guest guest
My FreshLife is not as quiet as Ernest's is, and I did call the company. They said they could fix it for me, but I would have to ship it back for them to work on it: I am not willing to be without it for that length of time. So, they recommended a hot water flush: this just means that the water barrel is filled with very hot water and stands for about 15 - 20 minutes while I fill a gallon container with purified water and do some other things in the kitchen. When the time is up, I dump the hot water, fill the water barrel with purified water, and put it all back together. The sound is diminishing, but I still know that it is running. Not annoying at all. Mine sits on a table in the kitchen and takes very little space. Each batch makes enough sprouts for about five days for me to have sprouts at nearly every meal. Guest guest
Yeah...I rent a room, so ditto here. :~( It's the only reason I don't have one. They *do* have a suggestion of hooking it to a pump sprayer, but it needs to be pumped for pressure. The info I've gotten from them on that varies from pumping once daily, to pumping it several times a day. Several times a day would defeat my purpose, so I haven't taken that chance. They *are* working (or claim to be) on a better reservoir set up, for those like us unable to access a water source. I'm not sure when they will have that ready. I talked to them back in May, and I am on the waiting list to hear about it. By the way, you don't need to tap into a water line. You *can* hook it directly to a sink faucet. They even sell a pass-through adapter so you can still use the sink while it's hooked up. Maybe that could work for you? I also want to mention that while they do have an affiliate plan, I am not signed up with them, so I don't get anything for recommending them. (Didn't want anyone thinking this was a tad spammy!) Guest guest
I spoke with GoGreen today, and they told me they should be out with that new model in about 3 months. It would involves something like a 5 gallon bottle, from which some kind of pump is attached. But until then.... but i am not yet certain which is best for me. i cannot remember to change water every day. some sounds are hard for me (example, i passed out in sams club store a day or two ago because of a certain sound there.) and i cannot hook up to a water source.
