Make sure that you are comfortable with the doctor and that the doctor knows

what he/she is doing.  Wait until after the scope and see what the results are

and then make a decision.  If the disease progresses

My son will be 17 in Aug. He had a Heller myotomy when he was 6. Been getting

NCCP's for years. He's not on any meds. GI doc wants to put him on something. He

is going to scope him and do a biopsy of lining of the E. this summer

...,....just wondering

What others thought?? son doesn't want to be on any meds

Due to side effects, I don't take PPI and have been using DGL. It is an herbal

I learned about from an environmental MD and nutritionist back in 1995. It

works by chewing and interacting with saliva. I use Zantac for short term use.

PPI can cause problems with the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, one of

which effects B12 which can cause neurological problems over time. Sometimes

it's not the acid that is the problem but a stomach that is too alkaline. This

can also cause burning. I also watch my diet. I'm a vegetarian and mostly

vegan with a bit of cheating on cheese. I also cut out gluten. Some food such

as chocolate, coffee, dairy products and some others will contribute to painful

reflux.

It's a blance that may be different for everyone. It's also a work in progress,

eh?

Good luck.

NCCPs could be a number of things. Some are triggered by stomach acid.

Medications to reduce the acid (not stop it, digestion still happens)

could make a difference in that case. There are other medications for

other types of NCCPs. Sometimes they do have side effects but if he is

more comfortable with the pain than the side effects or even the risk of

effects then that is just a personal choice that for some types of NCCPs

is not going to effect his health too much. Some medications for NCCPs

can for some people also help them swallow. What works for one does not

work for everyone though.

Pain, in general, not just related to achalasia, can effect health. Pain

can increase blood pressure and stress hormones. A lot of people live

with chronic pain and still have great lives. There is no right answer.

If the doctor finds evidence of acid reflux damage then it can be very

important to do something about the acid. Long-term acid can cause

damage that can lead to myotomy failure, esophagitis, Barrett's

esophagus and even cancer and esophagectomy. Diet sometimes helps.

Sometimes it takes medications.

Two questions:

1. What type of med does the doc want to put your son on?

2. Have you read my " famous " NCCP post and discussed it with your son and his

doctor?

Debbie, My son's doc wanted to out him on Previcid or something similar...Yes I

read your NCCP post. Thank you. I am very interested in maybe having my son

(Trent) try the L 'Argnine ....I believe that is an amino acid? Thanks I will

talk to his doc..

Thanks Sharon, I will wait and see what scope shows ....there is only one GI doc

here in Michigan that knew anything about achalasia in chilldren ....he retired.

We liked him a lot ...not familiar with doc taking over tor him.

Dglycyrrhizinated Licorice. It is licorice that won't affect blood pressure.

The one I take is made by enzymatic and is Fructose free.

It is an amino acid and it should be balanced with another one, Lysine

to prevent the simulation of the production of some viruses like herpes

(cold sores).

I don't know if L'arginine is a good or bad idea. The idea for the use

is that Nitric Oxide (NO) is used to relax the LES but the nerves that

produce it are destroyed.

An idea against it is that achalasia may be because of an inflammatory

process. Adding extra NO to inflammation may not be a good idea unless

you want to kill some cells, which may be why the NO nerves died. Off

the top of my head I don't remember any research dealing with achalasia

on the topic of NO possibly being part of the problem but consider this

which is about another neurological disorder.

Nitric Oxide-Mediated Oxidative Damage and the Progressive Demise of

Motor Neurons in ALS.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22488161

" This is perhaps best illustrated in ALS where physiological levels of

NO promote survival of motor neurons, but the same concentrations can

stimulate motor neuron apoptosis and glial cell activation under

pathological conditions. "

Does it apply to achalasia? I don't know but it sound eerily similar.

What is the doc's reasoning for putting him on Prevacid or other acid reducer?

Does your son have ANY symptoms of GERD? Does he actually " taste " acid backing

up?

And if your son's NCCPs have no evidence of being related to acid, has the

doctor read my NCCP post?
