Guest guest
It is very important to find a good surgeon. In Maine the ability to find a qualified surgeon is rare. I live just north of Bangor and they don't have any surgeons at Eastern Maine Medical Center or St. ph's Hospital that can do the HM. A dilitation cannot be done in Bangor as we no longer have any thoracic surgeons in case of a rupture. I am now 5 days post HM and doing great. I cannot imagine going through what you did. I am just happy that I haven't encountered any problems. I had my HM at the Scarborough Surgery Center which is part of Maine Medical Center in Portland. Where in Maine are you from? I live in Corinth which is about 20 miles northwest of Bangor. S -- About Hm Surgery. Had my Heller Myotomy surgery in 2001. How it came out,the first couple of day were very good. Second and 3rd day problems started ,very bad stomach pain with dificuld breathing which got very bad in the early 5 th day ,rushed to the ER,then to Maine Medical Hospital, where I went in to emergency surgery. They found that my esophagus had ruptured and I was sebsis another day and I would have died. It was repaired after a 9 hour surgery. This is not to discourage anyone from the surgery. Now I can eat anything I want without even drinking and water to get it down. So a bad beginning turned into a good ending. It did take 4 days In the ICU and 14 days in the hopital with a morphine drip. But after all these years I can say it was worth it.. Take care all and make your own decisions and most of all find a very good doctoe to perform the Heller. Glad you are here to tell it. > > notan > > Hi Notan, I do not know where it happened. I did what they told me to do as far as eating. Pretty much all liquids, but things started happening, regardless. After numberous phone calls to the doctors office, I was told it may be my fault as I have a nervous problem, they put me on valium. Nobody told me to go into the office to be checked. Progressively, things just got so much worse to the point where my girlfirend was supposed to go to work that night and I told her to go but, after she saw my condition, she refused to go. A few hours later, I could not handle it any more. I asked her to take me to the emergency room. At that point I couldn't even talk. So my girlfriend told them the surgery that I went through so they called the other hospital. the doctor said to come in, immediately by ambulance. There was a stretcher there waiting for me to bring me in to the operating room because the doctor seemed to know, at the moment, what was wrong. So they brought me into the operating room and preformed a seven hour surgery on me and then three days in ICU and 11 days in the hospital. Had a feeding tube put into my stomach and lived off that with Ensure for at least a month. Then finally had the feeding tube removed and things started to get better. I could eat anything I wanted to eat. I am not downing the Heller Myotomy. It was alot to go through but I can eat anything I want, now without a half a gallon of water sitting next to me to wash it down. So in a way it was a scary time but turned into a blessing. As I stated in my early message, just find the right doctor. One with alot of Heller Myotomies under his belt. > > >

Guest guest
Thank you. I actually went to Mcs today with my family and didn't dread being there. I am still watching what and how I eat but at least now I know that as long as I am careful I won't have to dread eating in public anymore. The HM is the best thing I could have done. My surgeon was excellent. I just hope that those that are still suffering find some relief soon. S -- About Hm Surgery. Had my Heller Myotomy surgery in 2001. Guest guest
When I am able to eat solid food again my husband is going to take me to our favorite restaurant Red Lobster. We have not been out to a restaurant in over three months and I had to run to the rest room several times. Guest guest
The same thing happened last October when my husband took me out for our anniversary. I couldn't eat, I kept running to the restroom. It was so frustrating. Today I went grocery shopping and actually enjoyed myself for a change. S -- About Hm Surgery. Guest guest
Hello , Isn't fast food the worst? I just tried to eat fies and felt them collecting in my esophagus. Swallowing shakes is like a barium sulphate esophagram - where doctors have noted in my records, " Very slow emptying in the distal end, and distinct narrowing of the epigastric juncture. " The public aspect appearing to have an " swallowing disorder " also contributes to anxiety. Guest guest
Mc's fries are one of my favorite foods so it was horrible not being able to eat them as it would only take a couple to send me running to the restroom. Chocolate shakes are another weakness of mine so for it to go down was wonderful. I still have a little anxiety about eating in public but I now feel less likely to run to the restroom every few minutes.
