Guest guest
my experience with dilations: i went in (all 3 times) in the early morning and was out by lunch time (and ate lunch!).  there was absolutely no pain during or after for me. no barium swallow for me after. not certain about the sedation......remember being in the procedure room, then next thing waking up in recovery. best of luck christa >________________________________ > From: spiderfan108 <spiderfan108@...> >achalasia >Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 10:10 PM >Subject: What happens during and after an esophageal dilation? > > > > > >Hello! >I will be having an esophageal dilation in a week. I just had a few questions. What type of sedation do they use for this procedure? Does it hurt? How long will I have to stay in the hospital afterwards? Will I need to have a barium swallow afterwards? (I hate the stuff you have to drink to make your esophagus expand or something, I couldn't swallow it all immediately and it completely fuzzed up my mouth, but I thought the barium tasted good, lol.) Thank you for answering! > > > > >
Guest guest
A ballon is in settled in the esophagus to the LES. It is Expanded to burst the fibers. I will receive Propofol (spelling problem maybe). Verset is also used. It is an outpatient procedure. There are potential complications for perforation. You need to ask what the percentage is for the hospital who will be performing the procedure. Others can tell you more. Guest guest
Hello. My name is Monicqua and my son has achalasia. So far, he has had 21 dilations over a 6 year period. He goes in during the morning hours and he is eating by noon. He had a heller in 2007 and is having another one in July. ________________________________ From: spiderfan108 <spiderfan108@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 9:10 PM Subject: What happens during and after an esophageal dilation? Guest guest
Good luck in your dilatation next week. They generally use Medazolam as a sedative but if you can't take this there are other alternatives such as strong painkillers. You may or may not feel a little pop feeling but most don't feel anything during the dilatation only the slight pain afterwards in the throat or wherever the dilatation needs to be done. You will have to stay in the hospital a couple of hours or until you can swallow some food and drink which they will provide and you are ok on your feet. Remember to have an escort with you to go there so that you have someone to take you home and stay afterwards. This is important incase you feel ill afterwards. No you will not need a barium afterwards as there is no need. I have had in excess of 10 dilatations all together some with sedation some with just strong painkillers. If i can help in any other way including answering further questions then please feel free to e-mail me. from the UK ________________________________ From: spiderfan108 <spiderfan108@...> achalasia Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2012 3:10 AM Subject: What happens during and after an esophageal dilation?
