Guest guest
Thank you for the welcome and words of support! I was hoping to get some advice. Dr. Dempsey (the surgeon) is out of the office for a couple of weeks and the earliest he could get me in for surgery (and it's not guaranteed at this point) would be May 18th. Because I can't even get water down and am having symptoms of dehydration, Dr. Falk suggested that I come in tomorrow for a botox injection to get me through until I can have the surgery. I scheduled it for tomorrow afternoon, but wanted to get your thoughts. I know there is a risk of scar tissue and a less successful HM outcome, but I just don't think I can make it until the 18th, or later, with no treatment. Is this the right decision? Thank you in advance!!

Guest guest
Thank you for your response! Dr Falk is very experienced- he came from the Cleveland Clinic and I chose him specifically. I also chose Dr Dempsey because he is the Chief of Surgery and has performed hundreds of HMs. Unfortunately, because he is chief of surgery, he has obligations outside of surgery. He really is out of the office. I've spoken to his nurse 3 times today and she is really trying to figure something out. Dr Falk called him on Monday and he has agreed to see me on an emergency basis, but the earliest he could do the surgery is the 18th. I just happened to have an emergency at the wrong time, and I don't want anyone else to do the surgery. Dr Falk called me today to offer the BoTox since Dr Dempsey is out, so I'm thinking that it's my best option since I, too, am regurgitating 95% of everything, food and liquid, that I am taking in. I can barely take care of the kids and I'm scared that I'm going to end up in the hospital. It's very frustrating! Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't consider BoTox, but I feel like I don't have a choice. I appreciate your help!! > > > > Thank you for the welcome and words of support! Guest guest
My redo was lap, done robotically. And let me tell you, that robot is the greatest thing in the world! Even though my insurance didn't cover the robot part, I would go that way again in a heartbeat. IMHO, it's worth every extra penny I paid! mike in WI ________________________________ From: " weissf@... Guest guest
Thank you and Mike- that makes me feel much better! > > I just had a redo HM in October. Prior to that, I had 2 dilitations in an attempt to make it until the surgery. My surgeon yelled at me, saying I should have had botox because it causes less scarring than dilitation. I know that botox is contrary to popular opinion, but that is what she told me. > > > mike in WI > > > ________________________________ > From: erin_lievens <erinl@...> > achalasia > Sent: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 11:44 AM > Subject: Thank you and a question > > >  > Thank you for the welcome and words of support! Guest guest
Faith,  My redo was done in at UW Madison. Surgery was at 8:00am. I was walking the halls at 2:00pm and sent home the next day. Pain was very manageable. I had 1 shot of pain reliever in hospital. They sent me home with a bottle of pain reliever that is still as full as it was when I got it. I ate soft stuff - pudding, mashed potatoes, etc. - for 2 weeks after, then started adding more solid things. My surgeon OK'd me to be off work for 2 weeks, but I only took 1. Some of the incision spots were still a little tender, but otherwise I felt really good. mike in WI ________________________________ From: " weissf@... Guest guest
So the BoTox injection went well and I am able to eat and drink fairly normally for the first time in a long time. It's a strange and wonderful feeling. I hope it lasts until the surgery which hopefully will happen soon. I'm meeting with the surgeon next week to schedule it. Thanks again for your support! > > > > I just had a redo HM in October. Prior to that, I had 2 dilitations in an attempt to make it until the surgery. My surgeon yelled at me, saying I should have had botox because it causes less scarring than dilitation. I know that botox is contrary to popular opinion, but that is what she told me. > > > > > > mike in WI > > > > > > ________________________________ > > From: erin_lievens <erinl@> > > achalasia > > Sent: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 11:44 AM > > Subject: Thank you and a question > > > > > >  > > Thank you for the welcome and words of support!
