Guest guest
From a GERD report, wonder if protein is the problem? Not sure how you get it.Clear out the e with water, coffee Coke and eat slowly. Before every bite have a big drink, and of course never eat steak, any thing hard or large, try soft chicken. Pasta with olive oil will let it slip down. And have a manometry test to confirn Achalasia. >protein Foods Increase LES Pressure--Protien Foods Decrease LES Pressure Chocolate Coffee Ethanol Fat=BUTTER works great for me Peppermint Spearmint High fiber diet= This is important, get cereal with a LOT of fiber. Guest guest
Ditto on cold water for me too. I try to always have a bottle of water with me and I drink what I can and walk it off! I always have at least one bottle in the car too! I also take nifedipine as needed .  Kim A ________________________________ From: Christa D. Guest guest
For me, cold carbonated beverages seem to help more than non-carbonated ones. I'm a seltzer junkie, so I try to at least keep a can in the car for emergencies, and I have a sodastream at home. Guest guest
I was only recently officially diagnosed (last Thursday), but after reading hundreds of posts here and being struck by just how similar my symptoms always are/were, I thought I'd try to add something to your thread. I used to call them " attacks " too, when speaking to doctors and my family. Nobody understood. Why would an otherwise healthy male in his late twenties and (eventually) thirties complain of incredible neck pain (that's where it started for me) when all the tests (you wouldn't believe what I've been tested for - I'll leave that for another post) failed to find anything even vaguely wrong? Diagnosis: GERD. No, I wasn't really convinced either, especially when taking the strongest PPI doses absolutely failed to have any detectable effect on the length or severity of my " attacks " ? I mean, how strong does my stomach acid have to be to wake me up in agony with a significant " attack " 3 hours after double-dosing on 40mg Nexium?!? (I don't recommend that, just so we're clear, but I used to troubleshoot for a living and I decided the risk was worth knowing the result.) What _did_ work for me: - Lying down. This is of course the exact opposite of what you'd expect in acid reflux cases, so my doctors just went " uh huh " and ignored me when I told them that 90% of the time I could forestall an impending attack or at least lessen its severity by LYING DOWN and throwing my head backwards. It was absolutely clear to me that stretching my neck out in that fashion did help, undignified though it may be to suddenly leap up from my chair while at work and head towards the " office sofa " for a quick fully prone lie-down while talking to someone - Bananas. Over several years, the frequency of the pain increased, but the intensity thankfully decreased (I now understand why!). Also, the attack " epicentre " literally started migrating slowly down from the area around my Adam's Apple to my upper chest. By this stage, lying down had lost most of its seemingly magical potency, but I found that the texture of a banana in my gullet could help. Consuming other foods would help too, to an extent, but not as much as a banana, washed down afterwards with water (this was before the dysphagia started). Maybe the squishy texture somehow serves to mechanically absorb esophageal spasm? I don't know, but a banana is detectably more effective in my E. - Water. This is not new to anyone here. In my case it works to decrease the intensity of each " attack " . Cold - the colder the better. I hope that helps somebody, even just a little bit. Right now, I'm slowly coming to accept what this diagnosis will mean, and just how much my life has irrevocably changed. I'd do a HM yesterday if I could, but of course the surgeon can't see me for a consultation before the 19th at the earliest My greatest respect for all of you dealing with this disorder, and my highest hopes for all of us.
