Hi ,

 

You got your second opinion, but you did not tell us what it was. You only told

us that he wants to dilate using a 35mm dilator. What was the size of the

dilator previously used?  What did her find to be the condition of your

esosophagus?

 

If your are serious (I can't tell from your message, if you are serious, scared,

or being funny in a draconian way), about not having the operation during your

52nd year after having a particularly disturbing nightmare, I suggest you do not

allow your subconcious mind direct your conscious mind. A certain fortune teller

was the instigator that initiated a misguided person to ruin her relationship

Well I got my second opinion!

The new doc is going to try the 35mm dilation but can't get me in for 6 weeks!!!

I guess that means at least 6 more weeks of soup, yogurt and Sustagen. Dr Bessel

couldn't get me in any earlier.

Apparently there are 5% of us where no treatment is going to work and the end

result for us is the ectomy! I am sensing that's where I am going to end up

after all the stuffing around of more dilations and eventually a repeat HM.

I will also add that I had the worst nightmare last week. I was watching my own

funeral. My age was shown on a screen as 52. I am 51 next week. To say this has

freaked me out is an understatement!

I told my husband that I will not be having any operations or treatment during

the year I am 52.

I have to share this because this is obviously where my subconcious state of

mind is right now and it's probably the reason why I am not sleeping well at the

moment!

Just so you know where I am coming from asking you about the opinion, and I have

said this in other ways before.

6 years ago when I was having increased difficulty eating and coughing and

regurging in my sleep, I went for an endscopy and barium swallow.

The results showed a twisted, tortuous esophagus, that sank below my stomach,

coming back up again and appeared as a second stomach since it had become so

" mega " in nature. I went to the best known doctor in this specialty in NYC who

reviewed the xrays and told me that from viewing the Xrays that I must have an

ectomy. (The GI who did the testing, perhaps timid, had only suggested it might

be a good idea.) I then went to Philadelphia where one the most highly regarded

GI doctors in the US also reviewed the Xrays and medical history and came to

the same conclusion. The surgeon in the hospital disagreed.

 

My point, , is that in all your posts, I do not recall your ever telling

us from what doctors have told you, what is the condition of your esophagus?

What is its diameter? Is it " mega " ?  Is it twisted, tortuous, does it sink

below the stomach?  You need to know these things so you can make an informed

decision for yourself.  An opinion that you should " try another dilation " just

doesn't cut it for me, nor should it for you.  You need to know what the

condition of it is.  You must get answers before you agree to any next step? 

You are suffering big time and with the availability of doctors seeming limited,

I am getting more concerned for you.

I would have thought that if my E was streched or mega or twisted then Dr Bessel

would have told me after he did the last dilation or saw my last barium swallow.

I am starting to feel like the doctors don't care about the pain, suffering and

torture that I (we) have to endure!!

Unfortunately, you can't assume anything. I would suggest you contact Dr.

Bessell and have him either tell you exactly what he observed in your esophagus

or permit you to see your medical files.

 

This dread you feel and anyone would feel could become a vicious cycle adding

stress and worsening the way you feel. Either you or someone who could

" advocate " for you has to contact the doctors who have your records.

 

6 weeks is a long time to wait for a dilatation.

I thought 6 weeks was a long time to wait too, considering it's a very quick

procedure. I got booked in for my HM in only 3 weeks! I feel like I am in

this by myself and trying to get it sorted out gets more frustrating with every

doctor visit. I have to wonder why I keep going back. Perhaps I should do

nothing!

I don't think its a matter of their not caring, rather having a full schedule

which gives that appearance.

 

As far as doing nothing, I think you know that doing nothing is not an option.

You have to eat to live. If the food can't go down, something must be done to

enable it to do so.

 

What others take for granted we only wish we can do again. Part of our problem

in dealing in social situations is not just a misunderstanding of what our

problem is, but the perception that we appear perfectly fine.

Please do not do nothing. Do some resesrch.  Google hosptials that deal with

Achalasia.  I did and found tw hoospitals in the ville, Florida area

that deal with this.  I did more research and each hosptial and found Mayo

Clinic has 200 patients a years from all over the country.  Doctors and

Surgeons have almost 20 years experiance.  So it would be work for you time to

research.  I am having the HM on the 18th.  The doctors treated me like a

friend who was very conserned.  Hang in there.  We are all with you and

following your every step.

I am so sorry to hear they couldn't get you in sooner. You have to be so

frustrated . I hope you find something to sustain you in the meantime.

Subject: 6 week wait for 2nd dilation!!

 

Well I got my second opinion!

The new doc is going to try the 35mm dilation but can't get me in for 6 weeks!!!

I guess that means at least 6 more weeks of soup, yogurt and Sustagen. Dr

Bessel couldn't get me in any earlier.

Apparently there are 5% of us where no treatment is going to work and the end

result for us is the ectomy! I am sensing that's where I am going to end up

after all the stuffing around of more dilations and eventually a repeat HM.

I will also add that I had the worst nightmare last week. I was watching my own

funeral. My age was shown on a screen as 52. I am 51 next week. To say this

has freaked me out is an understatement!

I told my husband that I will not be having any operations or treatment during

the year I am 52.

I have to share this because this is obviously where my subconcious state of

mind is right now and it's probably the reason why I am not sleeping well at the

moment!

I seen my doc today and he suggested another specialist who starts out with

a 40 mm .

I am thinking of doing the dilation rather than surgery cant wait to see

what the other doc says.
