Guest guest
Hi Amethyst8, and welcome. With all the ups and downs your daughter is suffering, I wonder if a change in medication (increase dose, or change SSRI) may be warranted. Also, she may need to return to therapy for booster sessions during the worsening times. Were you happy with the quality of therapy she received? Another thought is, if she's finding bossing OCD too hard all the time, she may be depressed. Several on the list have posted about the need to adequately treat depression before tackling compulsions. My daughter is quite a bit younger than yours, but I have off and on used prizes or offered to take her somewhere special to motivate her to do E & RP. This hasn't seemed to interfere with the process so I file it under " whatever works " and bribe away. :-) Trying to build some fun or pleasure into exposures helps too: For ex, for a child with cleanliness compulsions, you can spread icing on a cake, find a craft kit with sticky glue or paints, etc. There are some really good lay exposure planners on this list, along with our list professionals, if you'd like some specific advice to help your daughter tackle certain compulsions. Guest guest
HI Amethyst: Welcome to this group. I also have a 14 year old, a son, with OCD. Does your daughter continue to get CBT? Sometimes our kids need a tune up. Also they have to learn that bossing back OCD is a way of life and in general they will pay dearly for giving in to OCD. SOmetimes of course, things get tough and symptoms will break through, but they learn that they will get a bit better again soon. You mention a tricky problem that can crop up with our kids once they are treated. THey are smart and learn how to get what they want from those around them by using their dx of OCD. My son has certainly done this and told his therapist what suckers we are! When your daughter is able to boss back just for the reward of the encouragement, recognition and high praise she gets from her family for doing so, you know that the full lesson of doing CBT has been learned. I suggest you bring up this situation with her CBT therapist and work together on a plan to turn this around. Good luck, take care, aloha, Kathy (h) kathyh@... Guest guest
Stacey, welcome to the group! I joined this group after my then 11 y/o son was diagnosed last year (he's 12 now). Not having a local support group near, this group has been my greatest support. I'm sure you'll find it very informative too. I wish I had an answer for your son's behavior about repeating words, but I'm not sure on that one regarding its relationship to OCD. It might depend on why he's doing it - whether it's while searching for the next word or deliberately repeating or something else(?). We have some great and experienced moderators in this group and I'm sure one of them can help you. Also Dr. Chansky is an advisor too! Was the doctor you mentioned your family physician? Is your 5 y/o in kindergarten? How's school going? Is there anyone in your area familiar with treating OCD? Unluckily, there's no one near enough to us where I can take my son so we're sort of on our own. And, as in most things when kids are older, my sons would listen to someone else better than they do me! I actually wish were younger, like your son, in that I think he's go along with " treatment " more easily and play along with bossing OCD back! Keep us updated! And again, welcome! - single mom to (12) with OCD and dysgraphia; (12) with separation anxiety; Randall (16) - > Hi everyone - I'm new to the group - I have a 5 year old who was just > diagnosed with OCD. Guest guest
Dear Stacey - I too am new to this group, though we have been dealing with OCD for 8 years here. My son has had OCD since he was a toddler. The " stuttering " that you are referring to is what we call " the repeater " in our home, and is one of 's OCD behaviors. And, he'll tell you that it's his OCD that is doing that. Take care. in Rhode Island
Guest guest
Hi Stacey, Welcome to our group! You will find a wealth of knowledge and support here. I am glad to see that you have found Dr. Chansky's book already. She is a wonderful resource to have access to. If you have questions for her they can be addressed through this list, just mark them " Ask Dr. Chansky " , and she will reply to you. To address you questions about your son repeating words....my son, who has AD/HD and OCD does the same thing. I do not know that anyone has ever been able to tell me whether or not this is an OCD symptom. Tommy tells me that his brain gets jumbled up and he cannot find the words he needs to use. I suppose in Tommy's case it could be a combination of wandering attention and unwanted or sticky brain thoughts that have nothing to do with the conversation he is having. We try to be patient with him and not rush him when he is experiencing these symptoms and eventually the words come. I do notice that this symptom is more pronounced when he needs a medication adjustment. in Southeastern PA dunagins@... wrote: Hi everyone - I'm new to the group - I have a 5 year old who was just diagnosed with OCD. Guest guest
Hi ! Welcome to the group. Your question " What is the difference between Essential oils or called " EO's " and Fragrance oils (called FO's)? Essential oils are created from plant or organic materials .. peels , woods, barks .plants, flowers ect.. They are created eithter by distilling or by pressing. Fragrance oils are created by chemicals and sometimes plant material too. some people have allergic reactions to fragrance oils but can tolerate essential oil. Essential oils can be very expensive like jasmine or fairly cheap like sweet orange.. Glenbrook Farms Herbs and Such Living Healthy! Guest guest
Hi Stacey: Welcome to the group. Dr. Chansky's book is wonderful and I wish it was written when I first started learning about OCD in 1997. It is wonderful to see the explosion of helpful books about OCD and the increased understanding of this difficult disorder. OCD symptoms can come up in any area. In fact we learned to expect a problem event to be based in OCD first and respond accordingly. Very few times was this approach proven wrong. If your son gets anxious while this " stuttering " is happening, it is likely to be connected to his OCD. Another thing you might want to rule out is that it is a vocal tic. Our son, Steve, had symptoms that looked tic-like when he was first getting treatment, but they turned out to be complex compulsions. It is common for kids with OCD to have transient tic disorders. Often OCD sufferers are thought to have other problems along with their OCD. When the OCD is treated, voila! the other problems go away. OCD is so mysterious in the many ways it can manifest. Dr. Lee Baer's book, " The Imp of the Mind " is a very interesting one which describes the less visible OCD symptoms very well. Guest guest
,
I'm going through something pretty similar. I've had two lateral releases done-both on my left knee. The most recent was 3 months ago. I'm still in a huge amount of pain, not from the surgery though, it's the same pain I had before. I've also been in PT on and off for about 3 years and that has not helped me at all with the pain. I've seen 6 doctors so far and later this month I'm seeing my seventh who I've heard very good things about so I'm really hoping that he can do something! Hope you can get some help from your doctor too!

Sharon
Guest guest
Sometimes the pain is not due to the reason we supposse to be; I know 2 cases (one of them is mie) in wich something in the articulation is trying to compensate the real problem from a lot of time, the real problem can be properly addressed by the doctor, but the efects of the compensation can lead to tendinitis, for example, I guess that lots of times there are tendinitis remanent which van be very painfull and dificult for teh patient to be aware where is teh pain coming from; I have a friend wich several arthorcopys for meniscus, and with a knee really degenrated, which pain results to be a tendinitis for this compensarion effect. You know how the doctor diagnosed this?, very curious, after a scan with 'contraste, resonancia' Im don't know the english words, but this is a scan with a liquid injected in tyou vains, and after 3 hours when the liquid is supposses to be arrived to the bones, the make the san MRI (more powerfull than a normal RMI) , and nothing was adverted, but, this doctor was a good one, and then tried a sort of diagnosis of some tendinitis/tendinosis, which sometimes cannot be see in the MRI's , and injected him with a local analgesic + corticosteroid; this is not a treatment (it does not repair nothing) but a diagnostic tool, for if the pain disappears after the corticosteroid injection, the problem was really in the tendon and the phisiotherapy can be now directed to the real problem.
I believe that with a proper diagnostic, maybe the problem could not be fixed, but can improve a lot.
regards.
