Guaifenessin. Yes, I've been taking it for years.

The jury is still out on whether or not it helps fibromyalgia. Dr. St.

Amand is the one who has put forth the treatment idea. There were some

experiments that supposedly debunked it, but St. Amand rebutted with a

list of problems with the experiments that would have caused the

negative results.

In any event, it appeared to help my fibromyalgia for a while, and then

I hit a plateau where I still have FM but it's not very painful or

debilitating most of the time. (Exceptions: storm fronts moving

through, getting cold and damp, disrupted sleep due to bronchitis.)

What I did discover as a bonus was that taking Guaifenessin on a regular

basis (600 mg BID) has kept me from getting the recurrent sinusitis and

bronchitis that I used to get (half a dozen times each per winter season

was typical for me; now I get zero or one occurrence per season). My

regular doctor didn't know anything about using it for FM, but says she

keeps her patients who have year-round allergies on it as a maintenance

drug, to keep the fluids flowing properly and cut down on the incidence

of sinusitis and bronchitis.

I believe this drug has very low incidence of side effects, but of

course your mileage may vary. It is available very cheaply as a

generic, and the generics work just fine for this.
