" ========== Dear , Will you please be so kind to give some more explanation? What exactly contains Stratton's big protocol and what your " more mild version " ? Greetings from Amsterdam, Jan ======== stratton actually recommends taking a few strong antibiotics together and when i tried that i lived in the bathroom. instead, i decided that since both myco and chlam were intracellulars, and since i had tested positive for mycoplasma at the onset of my cfids, more than once, that i would follow the MYCOPLASMA ROUTINE similar to what nicolson and leslee of mycoregistry recommend.... that protocol for me is easier to take and has worked for me just fine..... the protocol of stratton with several antibiotics at once was so hard for me to function, that i could not do fairly by my family, so i had to come up with something that worked better for me. AND stratton, even with this strong protocol, was not getting most folks off the antibiotics permanently, so that is what tilted me towards a less stringent practice... the latest protocol i have is from may 98, so he may have evolved a new one, and if you need to find a newer one, the national cfids foundation may have it, i surely don't, since by 98, i had found a protocol that at least controlled the myco and chlam, even if it did not vanquish them.... you can reach national cfids foundation by contacting: Jill McLaughlin at amclaughlin1@... or their website http://www.ncf-net.org or: Jill McLaughlin, Executive Director National CFIDS Foundation, Inc. 103 Aletha Rd Needham, MA 02492 phone: 781-449-3535 in the protocol i have in my possession, PROBABLY NOT THE LATEST, stratton mentions secondary porphyria as part of chronic chlamydia. so he says to do 1) high carbohydrate diet, 2) high oral fluid intake, 3) avoid red meats, 4) avoid milk products, 5) get most of your sugar from glucose not fructose or sucrose, 6) avoid alcohol. I TOTALLY IGNORE 1,3, 4 AND 5. I follow 2 and 6. since whey protein has made such a big difference, i am glad i did. all these rules were for the porphyria, which i must be through the worst of, so that is why i can ignore them. then he mentions taking b complex vitamins, antioxidants, and espec. b12 (i take these, but i am not perfectly adherent) benzodiazapine drugs (antiporphyrinic ) and hydroxychoroquinine (antiporphyrinic) - i do not do this oral charcoal (soaks up the porphyrins) i don't need this. stratton runs a bunch of blood tests, for things tied to porphyria, and for b12, liver function, and homocysteine among others. and of course, he tests for the chlamydia with PCR, culture, and igm and igg. stratton thinks it is important to get the porphyrins under control before starting the antimicrobials.... he started with amoxicillin and probenecid or penicillamine and probenecid later adding either bactrim and isoniazid or levofloxacin then he tests for the presence of chlamydia while you are on the therapy, hopefully you will test negative in pcr and igg and igm, and then can go off.... this was the same protocol for both the MS folks they see and for the cfids folks they advice out of compassionate care. i think that given the immune system differences, in my view the MS folks, who are often tilted more towards TH1, probably responded better to this protocol than the cfids folks who are often more th2 biased immunologically. there is absolutely no medical advice here from me, just some ramblings on a protocol two years old. if you want a later protocol, you should email or write the national cfids foundation (i am not a member) and they will tell what you need to do to get it from them. still, i am SO GRATEFUL to stratton for figuring out that the chlamydia pneumoniae was part of the cfids problem universe, because treating it and the myco has made the biggest difference in my life. nancy mcfadden
