Guest guest Posted September 13, 2002 Report Share Posted September 13, 2002 Certificate Programme on 'HIV and Family Education' at IGNOU The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi has announced a six month Certificate Programme on 'HIV and Family Education' through distance learning mode. This is the first time that an Indian University has announced the launching of a programme of study on `HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) and Family Education' that focuses on substance abuse as well as sex education. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India has established a Chair at IGNOU to promote research and development of study on HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), Family Education, and Social Welfare. Admission to the first certificate programme on and 'HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and Family Education' is currently on. The programe will be useful to school teachers, health care providers, NGO functionaries, parents of adolescents and those interested in acquiring knowledge on family education, HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), drug addiction and counselling. The course content is available in Hindi and English along with audio and video components. The twenty books (blocks) comprising seven courses and 90 chapters, is a result of almost three years of intense work involving experts from various disciplines drawn from renowned institutions such as JNU, AIIMS, NACO, UNAIDS, NCERT, NOS from New Delhi, YRG Care from Chennai, TISS from Mumbai, St. 's Medical College, NIMHANS and Asha Foundation from Banagalore, Shalom from Dimapur etc. Several social work and counseling centres across the country have also made their contribution in course preparation. Though the minimum entry qualification is 10+2, the course can be taken by anyone with a higher degree. Out of seven courses on offer, a student has to take up at least four courses-two compulsory and two optional. Though the minimum time duration is six months, it can stretch to two years and the course fee is a modest Rs. 800/- The application forms are already available and can be collected from IGNOU head quarters or from any of the 45 Regional Centres of IGNOU. IGNOU provides walk in admission for its certificate programme.
