It is best to eat taurine at the end of a high protein meal. Unlike tyrosine or tryptophan (e.g.), taurine is best absorbed by being consumed along with protein -- according to Atkins, MD -or maybe it was Leon Chaitow, DO, ND, in his _Amino Acids In Therapy_. That is an excellent, yet short, work on the many confirmed uses for amino acids in clinical medicine. Quite often it is not essential to have low blood values of a particular nutrient, before beginning to supplementing with it. It all depends on the substance. With amino acids, I believe there is a wide margin of safety. It may not be the intention to correct an amino acids deficiency, but instead, to use the amino acid as a pharmacological agent, beyond its use as a nutritient. E.g., l-tyrosine can be used to boost dopamine production (and thus possibly: increase alertness, enhance mood and other stimulant-like benefits -- without an l-tyrosine deficiency existing. Actually, now that my memory has been tweaked, I recall Chaitow saying in _Amino Acids In Therapy_ that if the patient can afford it / has insurance coverage, it is best to have a comprehensive amino acid analysis done. This analysis can be used to formulate a fundamental amino acid replacement regimen. But again, once you have treated any deficiencies that might exist, there are all kinds of examples of good reasons to ingest extra amounts of a particular amino acid, to enhance some aspect of one's neurobiological functioning. Hooray for amino acids! Hud
