Guest guest
Hello - Yes, it appears to have worked. My cholesterol is down from 272 to 227 since I started about a year ago, with no change in diet. One caveat - I also started Plaquenil in January, which is also known to lower cholesterol. Did you check lp(a) also to see if it came down, or just cholestorol? According to the published literature the only thing shown to work other than flushing Niacin is a prescription drug called Niaspan. Thanks Doris re: Niacin Hi all - Just wanted to add that I take Niasafe, from Thorne, and have had no reaction such as flushing. It is designed to lower cholersterol without causing the side effects described in some of your posts. I do have to take up to 2 grams per day for it to lower cholesterol, but I tolerate it just fine. Guest guest
Cholesterol is totally different than lp(a). Lp(a) or lipoprotein(a) is a newly discovered lipoprotein that is being found to be a much higher indicator of disease than cholesterol. In fact, some conjecture that we may eventually may not care at all about cholesterol, just lp(a). Who knows if that will pan out. But in those of us with high lp(a), it is a genetic problem and causes serious disease in our families, and I don't believe non-flushing niacin lowers it, which is why I asked. In fact, even disregarding lp(a), the cholestrol number you gave looks like a total cholesterol, which is now known to be meaningless. The important number is the " bad " cholesterol, not the " good " cholesterol, so knowing how the total changes doesn't do you any good. If you ever have cholesterol tests, insist on getting the hdl and ldl, and it's really the ratio between the two that is important. Finally, I am glad you pointed out that you started another drug at the same time, so the niasafe might have had no effect!
