Guest guest
Does anyone have any comments about the use of Splenda as a sweetener. Since it says it is " made from sugar " , I thought it safe, but have read: http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_dangers.htm Dr. Mercola seems to indicate that a lifetime of using Splenda equals half a soda with aspartane, but http://mercola.com/2001/jun/23/chlorine.htm seems to iindicate that the product might be dangerous. If anyone with a chemistry background (Rich?) would comment, I would be grateful. Beck
Guest guest
Beck, I had not heard of sucralose before I read your message. I read Dr. Mercola's comments and looked at some of the references to sucralose in Medline. Although I didn't see any problems in the published work, it's true that most of it is sponsored by the companies involved, and there wasn't any study of long-term human use. I really don't have any inside information about this product, but I personally tend to be cautious about regularly ingesting substances that aren't found naturally. Sometimes problems do show up after long-term use of " engineered " foods and pharmaceuticals. Sorry I don't have something more specific to offer. Yes, it's a question of trade-offs, as usual. Between diabetes, CFS, and candida, I really have to stay away from sugar in all forms, but psychologically I just can't stand feeling deprived for long stretches. So I do use Splenda and the sugar-alcohols, keeping my fingers crossed that there won't be any problems with long-term use. Guess I'm used to being a medical guinea pig :@< I can tell you that aspartame gives me migraines, and acesulfame potassium (ACE-K) makes me depressed and sleepy and headache-prone, but Splenda has no side effects for me personally. And it is the best tasting sugar substitute (IMHO). -- el (andrea@...) - Nevada City, CA, USA " ...wake now! Discover that you are the song that the morning brings...
