" Capacity Building Workshop For Personnel in the Welfare Sector

On Chemical Dependency and HIV/AIDS " KRIPA INSTITUTE OF TRAINING

Kripa Foundation, Mt. Carmel Church, 81/A, Chapel Road, Bandra West

Mumbai: 400050

Introduction

The problem of Chemical Dependency has always been an integral part

of our society. However, during the late 70's there was an alarming

increase in the drug-use population belonging to the low socio-

economic strata, women, as well as children. It then became the need

of the hour to initiate intervention.

In the year 1981, a priest (a man of religion), an alcoholic (a man

of experience), and a doctor (a man of science) initiated the concept

of Kripa, which was started in the premises of a church in Bandra.

After the long years of service towards alcoholics and addicts, there

was a realization that, there is a paucity of staff to deal with

Chemical Dependency. Such training programmes were then initiated

through the Kripa Institute of Training in the year 1999.

KIT focuses on enhancing information base and technical ability in

Chemical Dependency and HIV/AIDS. Programmes are conducted on a

regular basis providing exposure to medical, paramedical, social

groups and experiential counsellors and students. The facilitators

include experienced nationally and internationally acclaimed

authorities from within and outside the organisation.

The last decade has seen the onslaught of HIV infection amongst

sufferers of Chemical Dependency. High-risk behaviours like sharing

needles for IV drugs, multiple partners, make them a vulnerable

group, an easy pray to the deadly virus.

The present workshop is a part of this continuous process initiated

by Kripa towards imparting training to those who have compassion for

the Chemical Dependency/ HIV affected/afflicted. Participants of the

workshop will obtain suitable competence in theory and practice for

DAMMS (Drug Abuse Management and Monitoring System) and HAMMS

(HIV/AIDS Management and Monitoring System).
