I went through my worst CFS phase and menopause at the same time. I had no idea

whether the symptoms were CFS or menopause. I also had no medical assistance

during this time and used herbals to regain my health.

I controlled and got rid of hot flashes by increasing Vitamin E to 1600 I.U. a

day with 50 mcg of selenium.

Any product that has Chasteberry (or Chaste Tree Tincture) will help both the

menopause and the CFS. If your acupuncturist can get supplements, the one I

found the best was Feminine Liquidium from PASCO (a German herbal company).

Just the facts, Ma am.

acupuncurist of course against it ( says herbs only work), but not very

convincing.

hi Katrina and all -

for cardio and osteoporosis protection. This appeals to me.

FWIW, the theory that estrogen/progesterone will give you protection

from cardiac disease has been pretty thoroughly debunked in all the peer

review journals. However, it will still help to protect your bones, I

personally think this is an important consideration since most of us

have been forced to be so inactive that it seems to speed up the onset

of osteoporosis.

If I recall correctly, the effect of Vitamin E and selenium was more of a

subjective thing. One day I just noticed I hadn't had any hot flashes for a

while. I started taking it after the second

hot flash, so I caught it early. I think it is important to take 1600 I.U. a day

to saturate your body, and reduce the amount when the hot flashes abate.

Presently, I am taking 400 I.U. 3 - 4

times a week.

PASCO Chasteberry Tonic is really hard to find. It is made by PASCO in Germany

and their policy is to just sell it through health care professionals - Doctors,

Naturopaths, etc.

I assume you live in the U.S. My sister in Seattle tried to find some there, but

wasn't successful, none of the practitioners listed as being suppliers, actually

were and tried to sell her other

company's products. I tried to contact the company in Germany direct, but didn't

get a reply.

I get mine from a local natural health care practitioner and also get some for

my sister and send it to her. If you like, I could contact him to see if he

could forward some to you direct. I think

the price was about $18.00 (Cdn) for a bottle, which lasts almost a month at a

tablespoon a day. Presently, I take it about 3 - 4 times a week, and if I start

slipping, I start taking it every

day.

Osteoporosis is indeed something ME/CFS patients have good reason to

worry about, at the very least because of being unable to do, often for

years, sufficient weightbearing activities.

Vit K has been studied and referenced in Medline as having very positive

effects on bone strength. Certain forms of calcium with vit D (pills or

sun) are also of value.

I think there is increasing medical validation that estrogen replacement

doesn't protect as much as they thought against cardio problems. With

exercise (aerobic) not available to many of us I am beginning to hope to

learn more about fats/oils to prevent plaque buildup, but am having a

slow time getting the resources I want (Pat Kane, currently associated

with a protocol surrounding Shoemaker's is the expert on fatty acids and

oils I'm trying to consult with and will let you know what I learn).

Personally I think estrogen replacement too great a cancer risk and would

stick with Vit K, calcium and magnesium and D for osteo prevention and

treatment. Then, there is Fosamax, that is respected in mainstream

circles (as is Relaxafene), though I don't know if it's been given

attention by CFS-minded docs re any disadvantages.

Definitely contact Women's International pharmacy, as another post

recommended. They are full of informational packets, very nice to deal

with, and about as inexpensive as anywhere.

BTW: I think that since men can get osteoporosis too, ME/CFS men should

look into the business of prevention as per above too.

I had about 30 percent bone loss last year due to the reasons you have

explained.I was using Fosamax but I quitted using it thinking that it is

harmful for the liver. Right now I only use Hydroxyapatite form of

Calcium, which I highly recommend. It is the most absorbable form.

Nil,

I just want to mention that if the hydroxyapatite comes from animal

bones, it can have quite a bit of lead in it. It's important to make

sure the product you're using is low in lead. According to Dr.

Murray's book, " Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements, " the

recommended level is less than 1 microgram of lead per 800 milligrams

of calcium.
