Guest guest
As focused on in my earlier responses about Secretin and the MMR, etc., my recent posting " these are children " (see posting www.neuroimmunedr.com ) and in turn looking upon these children as a Pediatrician, it is becoming obvious that most / all of what happens is " logical, " as per any other pediatric patient. In this case, the frantic frustration, watching an " out of control " child become more out of control say two important points 1. As noted appropriately by other parents, IF NOT working successfully, regroup, rethink what is happening, it is generally not going to be right or you are " missing " some other factor. 2. Treating just symptoms (i.e hyperness, aggression, distractability) may be an enlarging disservice to a child who may be " wired " on various foods, additives, or meds, who may have severe " headaches " or " brain swelling " symptoms secondary to the idea of a " meningoencephalitis " type process, body aches, etc. IF a physician or " expert " prescribing a medication or treatment plan does not have a good Pediatric orientation, a good understanding of the likelihood that your child was at one time was normal, not born " miswired or injured or genetically altered " then they do not likely understand what they are trying to accomplish with their medications or treatment plans. IF viewed as children, there is no place for many of the treatment approaches (or attitudes) being supported out there. NONE of these children should be left suffering any longer than necessary. The distress expressed here as parents, I hear echoed daily. We must turn to new routes, newer understandings rapidly, or we will not only continue to mistreat many children, we will ultimately loose our future " leaders " of tomorrow (look at the enlarging connection supporting " productive " families, professionals, higher IQ families, etc.). Let's make this change - it can now be done Goldberg, MD Message: 11 Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 19:18:26 EDT From: Lizanj@... Subject: Re: HELP!!!! Subject: Re: too much meds?? Hi Lois. What you have described is definitely concerning from a psychopharmaceutical point of view. First of all, biting and pinching are fairly angry, aggressive behaviors and are indicative of some level of agitation. Frequently doctors, particularly psychiatrists, operate from the " more is better " philosophy. In kids especially, this is often not the case. One of the side effects children frequently display when they are getting too much medication is termed " activation, " which basically looks like a kid on overdrive. When has experienced " activation " on Luvox, he did things like colored magic marker on the wall, overflowed the toilet, ripped up favorite books and pictures, etc. It was almost as if all of the impulse control he had disappeared. Speaking of impulse control, another possibility is that the child needs something besides (not in addition to) Dexedrine because biting and pinching falls into the lack of impulse control category; the child is probably taking Dexedrine to reduce hyperactivity and increase impulse control. If he is still biting, it is not working. Some questions your friend might need to consider before making a change is how long has the kid been on each medicine and with which additional med did the biting/pinching appear/get worse. those are just a few thoughts I have at the moment. I'll write back if I think of anything else. Good luck to your friend. Hi, Lois! I'm no rocket scientist, but if anyone is taking medication(s) for a behavior or illness, and it's not working, seems to me that the medications are unnecessary. Sometimes we don't know what's right, and we put such faith in doctors that we tend to not question them or their " authority. " Me, on the other hand, questions EVERYTHING... Hugs to JJ Bug!
