Martha,

My son takes adderall for ADHD. I do not see the effects of it as

I only give it to him on school days and it only lasts about 6 hours,

but his teacher last year noticed the difference (and so did his report

card). I have just recently started him on it again so we will see. The

first day we gave it to him he was up almost the whole night, but after

that he was okay.

Jin,

Dr. Goldberg just recently started my boys on Adderall. The 7 year old has

shown pretty obvious improvements...

* He seems to have more complex thoughts and is able to express them

* He is HAPPIER... less cross

* He is having fewer angry outbursts

* He seems have to better self-control when he is upset

* He now usually happily follows through when we ask him to do a task and

has even proudly reported back to us several times that he has done it (I

can't tell you how much of a shock this was!)

Regarding the other son, we're not quite sure what to think yet... he may be

less forgetful, but has not shown the clear improvement that the younger one

did.

The amount we started on for the 7 year old was 1/8 of a 5mg tab a twice a

day. I'm amazed we could see any difference at all on that shaving of a

pill, but we did.

One thing is CRUCIAL to note here... Dr. Goldberg told us that he would ONLY

try Adderall AFTER doing what he could with other meds to get the boys

functioning well (as healthy as possible). That's not an exact quote, but

the jist of the idea. Clearly Adderall would not be the first thing he put

a child on. My boys have been with him for a while... 5.5 years and 2

years.

By the way, I believe that Dr. Goldberg is still against Ritalin use... he

still has a study posted on his website regarding a link between Ritalin and

cancer...

Caroline,

is doing well past a two years, and of cause still with some

problem as a lot of OCD behavior while on Strattera, argumentive,

lack of time and task planning and etc.

Dr. G suggested to us to try adderall soon, and I almost can not wait

for Nov.

Does your son still on SSRI or Strattera while on adderall?

if adderall does not work, I hope Dr. G has something else to back it

up.

Thanks,

Jin,

Yes, we stayed right where we were with the SSRI's.

Strattera seemed to make my youngest one angry as well... can't remember

what it did or didn't do for the older one. They're not on it anymore.

They are both on a bit of Wellbutrin now as well as the SSRI and other meds.

Thanks, Caroline. I was worried if he is going to take ssri,

strettera, and Adderall at same time. Now that both yours and

's children off Strettera, I can assume it most like going to

be no Strettera, and need to talk to dr. G about how to hand off.

Jin,

They weren't weaned from the Strattera specifically to start the Adderall...

just happened to already be off of it when we started Adderall. So I'm not

sure if we would have stopped it anyway or not.

Good luck!

Just curious, did Dr. G prescribe Adderall with other SSRI's like zoloft and

wellbutrin? Just wondering about the serotonin syndrome element?

My boys are both on an SSRI, Wellbutrin and Adderall, but please note that,

from what I understand, Dr. Goldberg uses uncommonly low doses. I suppose

that would reduce risk. I also haven't ever heard of him prescribing any

MAOIs, which (from what I've read regarding serotonin syndrome) seem to be a

major culprit in the reaction.

I'm not really well versed on seratonin syndrome, though.

I do know that Dr. G is extremely conservative about what he prescribes (for

instance, when Strattera came out, our local pediatric practice was happily

dealing it out for about a year before Dr. Goldberg decided he would touch

it).

Hope that helps.

I am so sorry, but I just had to laugh when you said " dealing it out. " All

these drugs our kids are taking from doctors, maybe we should just call them our

local pushers. The old infamous " high paid dope dealers " as the old expression

goes. (If you could see my face I am totally laughing and being humorous, so

please noone take this the wrong way).

And yes, serotonin syndrome is indicated as a contradiction, although rare, when

combining an SSRI and an amphetamine. I didn't know Dr. G was supporting this

now.

Sorry, ,

Probably not my best choice of words... glad you got a laugh out of it,

though!

As far as his supporting this now, he is doing it very conservatively. His

first priority is still getting the body/brain as healthy as possible.

My step-son, ADD, never ASD, started it at age10, it is the only ADHD

med that works well for him and it has been excellent for executive

planning, controlling restlessness and behavior in class, and general

attention & focus at school….

,

The low dose may be the key.

At 51 lbs., my son takes a total of 5 mg. a day.

He might be more attentive on more, but Dr. G says this is the highest he

feels comfortable to dose.

This is good to hear.? The sleep issue worries me, but I have heard of it

not causing problems.

I'm leaning closer and closer to asking to try it.?

Thanks!

Hey ,

My younger son has been on it for several years (low dose). It©ös been a

great thing for him. He takes 1/2 of the dose in the morning, other half

late in the afternoon. He conks out almost upon hitting the pillow, so no

sleep issues here. In fact, sometimes HE tells ME he©ös tired and wants to

go to bed!
