Fellowship in Health Economics

FRONTIERS Program, the Population Council, New Delhi, India

Background

The Population Council is an international, nonprofit,

nongovernmental institution that seeks to improve the wellbeing and

reproductive health of current and future generations around the

world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable

balance between people and resources. The Council conducts

biomedical, social science, and public health research and helps

build research capacities in developing countries. Established in

1952, the Council is governed by an international board of trustees.

Its New York headquarters supports a global network of regional and

country offices.

The Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program (FRONTIERS) applies

systematic research techniques to improve delivery of family planning

and reproductive health services and influence related policies.

FRONTIERS is funded by the USAID and led by the Population Council in

collaboration with Family Health International and Tulane University.

FRONTIERS Program is looking for young bright economist as Fellow for

one year, extendable to up to two years for its Delhi office.

Activities and Responsibilities

· During the tenure of the Fellowship, it is expected that the Fellow

will develop and learn new skills and gain practical experience to

carry out economic analysis of reproductive health program.

· The Fellow will work with other staff of FRONTIERS program of

Population Council and contribute in economic analysis of the

reproductive health program such as pricing, cost analysis or cost

benefit analysis of the interventions implemented in the project.

· The Fellow will be encouraged to develop an economic evaluation or

sustainability study which he/she might like to peruse from the

Population Council

· The Fellow may be asked to travel in the ANE region to work and

help in the planning and analysis of economic component of

reproductive health projects.

· Participate in the trainings of the FRONTIERS undertaken as part of

capacity building activities

Expected Outcomes

· Complete one independent study on the economic aspect of

reproductive health program.

· Contribute in the analysis of economic components of reproductive

health projects supported by FRONTIERS.

· Write and present three papers in national /international

conference based on the studies carried out as Fellow.

· Publish at least two papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications

1. Ph.D. in applied or health economics

2. Work experience in reproductive health/health economics/health

financing/health sector reform

3. Good writing skills with evidence of journal articles published in

international/ national journal

4. Evidence of initiating and participating in research

Age limit

40 years and below

Fellowship Stipend

The fellowship stipend will be in the range of Rs.50,000-70,000 per

month (consolidated) depending on qualification and experience of the

candidate.

Duration

The fellowship is for a period of one year starting from March 2004 –

February 2005. It could be extended for one more year subject to the

good performance of the Fellow.

Supervision and Reporting

The fellow will be supervised on the basis of agreed upon outputs and

will report to the Regional Associate Director, Asia and Near East

Region, FRONTIERS Program.
