" January, 21-24 2004. We are pleased to announce that the International Meeting SECURING TREATMENT and CARE for PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV – Low-income countries: where are we now? will be held in Florence from January, 21-24 2004 The Meeting will be organized by the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (SIMIT) and other prestigious international institutions, and will provide an opportunity to discuss topical scientific issues, without overlooking the importance of the social impact of the disease. Delegates from UN Agencies (UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank, WHO), the Canadian International Development Agency, the European Commission, and acknowledged leaders from reference Centres, Institutions and Organizations, either government or not, worldwide (among which I am pleased to remember here the International AIDS Society, the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Global Health Council, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Family Health International, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the New York Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine, Médecins Sans Frontières, the Harvard School of Public Health....) have confirmed their active involvement in the Meeting. This Meeting represents an unique opportunity for discussing such issues as: The strategies and problems of prevention (focusing also on nutritional aspects and on the availability of microbicides of appropriate cost/efficiency); The simplification of courses of antiretroviral treatments (also in relation to problems of continuity); Viable strategies for the prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections; The control of coinfections (viral hepatitis and other sexually transmitted infections, intestinal infections and parasitoses, tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy); The state and prospects of research into antiretroviral vaccines; Viable strategies for the permanent training of health care workers; Problems relating to the accessibility and availability of vaccines for bacterial and viral infections, of antiretroviral drugs, as well as of drugs for associated pathologies (including palliative treatments); The global impact of the epidemic in terms of mortality, breakdown of the national social and productive fabrics, dynamics and temporal forecasts within the human contexts; The connections among the scientific, social and political aspects aiming at translation of purposes into action. The ultimate aim of this extremely important and highly prestigious Meeting is to find a constructive answer in fighting HIV in poor- income countries.
