The investigators also confirmed previously reported data suggesting that a region on chromosome 7 may be involved in the etiology of the disease as well. Dr. E. Folstein, of the New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and a multicenter team searched for genes related to autism in 75 families with at least two children afflicted with the condition. The team used 416 short tandem repeat polymorphic markers. Two regions in chromosome 13, D13S800 and the area between D13S217 and D13S1229, showed the strongest links to autism. The investigators linked approximately 35% of the families to D13S800 under an autosomal recessive model of autism and 33% to the latter region. The chromosome 7 region, D7S1813, had the next highest score. The investigators found that 29% of the families were linked to this site. This confirmed the results of a International Molecular Genetic Study of Autism Consortium study that found evidence of a gene related to autism near this region, the authors note. Another previous study indicated that a gene related to speech and language disorder reside close by. " In summary, " Dr. Folstein's team writes in the December 15th issue of the American Journal of Medical Genetics, " we have identified evidence for linkage to a previously unreported region on chromosome 13, and obtained evidence in support of a previously implicated region on chromosome 7. " They add that " [t]hese regions and others will be followed up in the second stage of our study by typing additional markers in both the original and a second set of identically ascertained autism families. The much awaited and delayed news piece on vaccine safety will air tonight at 6:00 pm on Sacramento's NBC affiliate KCRA Channel 3. It was initially scheduled to run Dec. 7, but was bumped until tonight. Parent advocate Rick Rollens was interviewed for the story a few week's ago. In addition, he supplied them with a video copy of his poignant testimony before Congress last August. Kathi with National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) contacted a local member of NVIC, Satterfield, whose son was vaccine damaged and has been compensated through the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. used to live in Citrus Heights and now lives in Petaluma. Having spent some time with her, Rollens is " sure she will present a very compelling story.
