Guest guest
'Study on prostitutes in India to be taken up' MANGALORE: Dr Joby EC, Principal of the MV Shetty College of Social Work, Mangalore, has been appointed Nodal Officer for the national- level research study on `Women In Prostitution in India'. He will be in charge of Karnataka. The study, sponsored by the Department of Women and Child Development of the Union Ministry of Human Resources, is being conducted by the Gram Niyojana Kendra, a national organisation based in Ghaziabad. The Department of Women and Child Development had commissioned the study to examine the extent and magnitude of the problem of prostitution in each state, to identify areas, which could be described as `prone areas', to find out the origin and operation of girls or women involved in prostitution and to understand the nature, pattern, trends and mechanism of the trade. The study is also aimed at examining the socio-economic backgrounds and life styles of the prostitutes and the factors responsible for them entering this profession and the reasons for their continuing in it. They will also understand the prostitutes' perception of their profession and their ways of living. A study of the behaviour of the clients and an analysis of governmental and non-governmental programmes for eradicating the problem and rehabilitating the victims of the profession would be taken up. Over 10,000 girls and women across the country are expected to be covered under the study. The study, according to Joby, will go a long way in planning effective strategies for the prevention of HIV and AIDS in India. It will be conducted by a team of of social scientists under the leadership of Dr K K Mukherjee, Professor of Delhi University. Joby has requested NGOs and others working in the field to cooperate with the team in the successful completion of the national project. http://www.newindpress.com/Newsitems.asp?
