Welcome home !!!!! I'm glad to hear that you're doing so well. Yes,

I remember that pain the day after. I wasn't any picnic, but it was worth

every bit of it! Don't try doing to much to soon as we all have a tendency

of doing. You still need lots of rest.

I can imagine your dogs were very happy to see you.

[ ] I'm home

Hi all,

I am back. It went well but surely hurt. I had the surgery on 9/14, went to

the Rehab Hospital on 9/18 and home today.

Gory details. I had a spinal and watched the whole procedure. Guess I'm

weird but it was interesting. The day after was dreadfully painful but my

rehab is going well. The Physical therapist says I have the range of motion

of 3 weeks after surgery not one. I am tired now and am just going to work

on the putter for a bit then go sit. It is pouring out-guess no field hokey

for today. The dogs were all happy to see me.

Missed you all!

Great to have you back, !

No, I don't think you're weird since you chose to watch your surgery. Bet it

was cool. Besides, we need all of the eye-witness experts we can get here.

Sorry there was so much pain the day afterward, but how is you pain level

now?

Pain now is quite bearable and it is oh so wonderful to stand up straight

and to walk up and down stairs without nearly crying. My left foot is still

kind of turned out and I think the muscle a bit shortened but if I work at

it can straighten out. I hate morphine- I was so out of it AND in pain

while on it, later on percocet at least my brain worked and I could keep my

eyes open. According to the PTs my surgeon is a genus so I lucked out. He

was a physicist who became a surgeon-very meticulous. They can tell in

therapy who are his patients.

Boy, I relate so much to your pain story. My surgeon said I literally came

into the hospital on a prayer and alot of morphine. Just as you said it is

wonderful to stand up straight without all the pain medicine. I am so

thankful that I too had a genius bunch of doctors working on my back. They

keep a close watch on me....they know I try to do too much too soon. I am

trying to watch and go at a slow pace. But with no pain, I forget that

it's only been one month and a day since surgery. Then, I have to remember

the RA pain will be back... but that is nothing compared to the back

problem. It is so good to be able to read here that others do know how bad

this pain can be. I am so thankful and grateful for good doctors and

others that really care.

I heard them talking to each other but resisted asking questions-just

watched. Thank you all so much for your prayers and concern. I'm doing

well-really want to take a bath.

It was interesting but strange.

So, , will the genius do the hip replacement, too??? If he's that

good, I hope so.

Yes, if I want it. At the moment other than the hip going out occasionally,

there is no pain in it. The knee still is quite swollen, bruised and hurts

but it such a different pain than what I've been living with that it's OK.

I know that there is no cartilage in the hip but if it doesn't hurt why do

it now-we'll see what everyone advises. I'll deal with PT and then my

hernia first. Started back on enbrel yesterday.

I hope you can put off having your hip replaced as long as you can. They

are always finding new ways to

repair joints. Plus with all the hip replacement recalls, maybe it would be

in your best interest to wait.

I hope your therapy includes hip strengthening exercises so that you can

improve your stability. I'm glad

that your doctor felt you were ready to go back on Enbrel.

Hi ,

So glad to see that you are home and doing so great. With my first tkr, I

was way off the chart with my progress. I didn't even go to rehab, just came

home and the doc had a home health nurse come change the dressings and a

physical therapist come three times a week. I always feel better in my own

home than a facility. I had my second knee done within a year after the

first and had virtually the same type of progress but developed complications

somewhere along the road and they are now proposing a revision of the left

tkr in the very near future. Not looking forward to that too much! I love

my right tkr, no pain, the stability is great and I can actually sit crossed

leg on the floor, I jog in the pool and I think it is true that you actually

feel taller because you are standing up straight. I pray that they can make

my left knee 90% of what my right knee is.

Keep up the good work and make your doctor proud. It is YOU who will be the

big winner in the end.

Gentle, tender, healing angel hugs,

Deb

Lila,

Good to read that you are doing so well after your back surgery. It is major

surgery, but in your case the outcome was well worth it. How is the RA

doing?

We have such strong members on this board who follow the doctor's orders and

go right off the charts in their recuperation. It just goes to show that RA

makes us a tough bunch of broads.

Keep up the good work!

Deb,

You put it so well...I think we are a tough bunch. The doctors do say my

recoveries always go so well and ahead of schedule. The way I see it, that

is my only job right now. The back is coming along great, but the RA is

slowly surfacing. I'm back on the Enbrel, and I will probably start my

methotrexate shots this week. I see my rheumotologist tomorrow. My

biggest concern right now is my feet. My toes on both feet on becoming so

deformed that it is getting hard to walk. Does anyone have good shoes they

would recommend? If that's my only problem, I will be happy! I enjoy this

bunch so much. Even though I don't post much, I read every day.

Thanks for being here....everyone! Lila

Deb,

Yes, things are going great except for my frustration. I have been so

handicapped that now I want to dive right into doing things and can't. Even

though my range of motion etc are great, I can't seem to stand still for a

long time. Need to clean out closets etc. How long were you on crutches?

Another problem is that my foot has been compensating for the knee for so

long that I limp if I don't concentrate.

Hey ,

Take some time and SLOW down. Just the surgery itself is MAJOR and you had

this condition for quite a while. Let your body get readjusted to its new

part! I was never on crutches. I was on a walker for 4 weeks, well he

actually wanted me on the walker for 6 weeks, but after 4 weeks, I was only

using it when I left the house. Then I went straight to the cane. I had the

first surgery on 11/1/99 and I was in Chicago for the millennium 1/1/00 just

using the cane again when I went out of the house. I too had all these

projects lined up for when I was going to be home and found that the least

little thing pooped me out and when I went back to work, I started out with

1/2 days first.

Don't rush things too much and I am sure that the PT will correct that foot

problem. Most good ortho surgeons will settle for nothing less than 100%.

Hang in there, girlfriend!

Hello Lila, I don't recognize your name, but can tell you're part of the

group. I also would like the answer to the shoe problem. My shoe size has

increased about 2 sizes since RA. But even getting larger shoes doesn't make

them comfortable. Dr. suggested wearing tennis shoes all the time, but just

putting my feet into enclosed shoes and wearing them awhile, they still hurt.

Are there any comfortable shoes for feet with RA?

Glad your recovery is going so well.

Be Blessed
