This should read that the finger swelling is NOT normal for her,

either.

Sorry!

hoping someone here can help.

I have a friend that I saw twice in the last 3 days and both times

her eyes and face looked swollen - the first time she told me she had

slept on her right side the night before and when she woke up that

morning her right eye was extremely swollen - the lid was hanging

over the eye a little bit and the under eye area was very

swollen. When I saw her a couple of hours later the area was still

swollen enough that I asked her if she had an allergic reaction to

something or if she had changed her face wash. She told me no, and

also mentioned that her fingers had been swollen for a few days,

which is really normal for her, either. The eye at that time, which

was about 3 hours after she had gotten out of bed, still looked " set

back " in the eye socket because of the eyelid swelling. The eye that

day stayed swollen most of the day. Today, a day and a half later,

again she told me she had slept on her left side (I guess she is

usually a back sleeper) and when she woke up that morning her left

eye was swollen, along with the right, although neither was swollen

as much as the right eye was two days ago. Fingers are still swollen

although not as bad as the last 3 days.

I've asked about her diet and she usually eats fruits, vegetables, no

meat, no dairy and very, very little processed food. Drinks tea and

water, no soda pop or coffee. Bowel movements good, usually 3-5 a

day and no constipation at this time. The only thing she has done

different is about a week ago she started taking a two packet a day

vitamin regime named MultiEssentials. I've sent along a link from iHerb

here:

http://www.iherb.com/store/ProductDetails.aspx?c=Herbs & pid=NFS-04938

We went over the ingredient list and she doesn't know of anything on

it she may be allergic to. I don't know enough about some of these

ingredients to know what they are.

She is very worried about the swelling and knowing her as well as I

do, it is highly unusual for her, especially to see the eye and

eyelid swelling hang around as long as it has and frankly, I'm

worried about how she looks too and what might be going on.

Would anyone like to comment on what they think might be

happening? Could the vitamin regime start a cleansing effect, and if

it did, is edema and swelling of the face and eyes, especially, a

by-product of cleansing?

I told her about what I had read here about a castor oil pack and she

is interested in trying one on her kidneys. If you put a castor oil

pack on your kidneys, would you put the flannel on your back or your

stomach? Is there something better to use on the kidneys besides

castor oil? She also had a bottle of liquid Bentonite Clay in the

cupboard and she took that out and started taking it today, but only

a couple of tablespoons so far. I told her beginning tomorrow she

might kick the Bentonite up to a tablespoon every few hours and do

that all day.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Could something have bit her....even in her sleep.... did she use anything different on her bedding? detergents, etc.. Any other symtoms? If this keeps up I would suggest going and having it checked out to find out for sure what it is so that you can help her treat it successfully. For general conditions the pack is usually placed on the abdomen. If specific.. then directly on the area affected.. i.e. lower back problems would go on the lower back. Thanks, Suzi - no, we don't think anything bit her, no new

detergents. no new bedding, etc. Other than the swelling she says

she is feeling fine, except for a headache today, but that was

probably caused because we were doing her personal and business tax

filings, LOL.

She is having her period and (started Tuesday) she mentioned today

that it was unusually and exceptionally heavy for 4 days, then

tapered off the last couple of days.

I look at her and have this blaring voice in my head that something

is wrong, which is upsetting me a bit, LOL. I think she is going to

go for the castor oil pack on the kidneys. I've been thinking about

doing that one myself. She upped her fluid intake today of water,

but she usually drinks 10-12+ glasses a day, anyway. She did say she

has drank a lot more iced tea this week than she usually does because

she was gathering paperwork for taxes. The tea is decaf, though.

Thanks!

I know this sounds strange... but did this start with an intake of more water ? I don't know, Suzi. Would an increase in water intake make her

" swell up " (for want of a better word, LOL)

it's possible...i'm checking all possibilities... I still think going and finding out what is wrong so that we can give her the best help would be advisable. , I would cut out the vitamins *immediately*, just in case that's the

cause. Especially since that's the only new thing going on in her life.

I used to use Tom's Deodorant and once switched to a " new and improved "

version of the same thing. Within a day or so my armpits were itching

horribly and looked red and swollen. I stopped the deodorant and the

itching and swelling left. Started it again a week later and it came back.

So of course stopped immediately and took it back to Whole Foods and told

them my story. There was nothing on the label that I could have possibly

been allergic to, but obviously I was allergic to something in there.

Perhaps she has the same kind of issue here.

Yes, I told her the same thing this morning - stop the vitamin

packs. She called and still has the swollen eyelids, this morning

both were swollen to the point they were poking out over her eyes

again and were swollen down into her nose. Fingers are still swollen

but not as bad as they have been. This weekend she ate only fruits

and salads and drank only water, but she is still taking those

vitamin packs. I told her to stop those and maybe do a short one day

fast today and drink only water, see if that doesn't flush the cells

out a little bit.

I doubt if I can get her to the doctor - her doctor has told her more

than once he thinks she is a problem patient because she uses herbs

and " self medicates herself " . My friends name is Annie and she will

probably try to resolve whatever the problem is herself and only if

it's still around in another week or two will she break down and visit the MD.

Doctors - so much for the quote, First, Do No Harm ....

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions! I appreciate your time

and trouble!

, I would suggest she be checked by a

health care worker, allopathic or naturopathic. Have her stop taking the

supplement, although I do not think that is what is causing it, you never

know. Over-insuring on vitamins usually is not harmful if they are water

soluble because we just pee out whatever we do not need, but if she is allergic

to something that they extracted the vitamins from, then that could be the

whole problem. On the other hand, it could be she is having edema from

heart failure or kidney disease. So without scaring her, encourage her to get

checked out. Until then we would be shooting in the dark about what to do

to help her.

No, no more water until she sees her care

giver. Too much can make edema worse hon.

Many thanks, Janet, for your comments. I've told her twice today to

make a dr's appt. and at leaast let the nurse practitioner look at

her eyelids, so maybe she'll listen to me before the week is out :-)
