Guest guest
<You may want to help out in the meantime by giving a tablespoon or two (depending on the age/size of your child) of mineral oil at bedtime to soften the stools and make the " delivery " easier and more frequent (so they won't be SO large).> This was exactlt the advice that my pediatrician gave me! (He is awesome) he stated that it is usually 1 tablespoon of mineral oil for each year the child is old (I'm not sure where the cut off is) Also he suggested that the mineral oil should be just a jump start thing along with a ducolax suppository to soften and help remove hard stool in the rectum. he also stated that when a child's bowel is soooo stretched from stool that it could take up to a year to return to proper size so then you should give the child a mild vegetable laxative before bedtime for a whole year. IF you stop too soon the constipation can return and because the bowel is so stretched it hcan be held for a very long time. OF course this was just for my child and I advise anyone who's child has chronic constipation to see a Gastro doc. It could be something more serious. Didn't Dr. Wakefield do a study on thi issue as well??? Let me check my 4000+ folders and IF I find it and IF anyone is interested you may email me privately for me to forward it to you. sdcarv@... Guest guest
a, I understand sorbitol in addition to being a sweetner is also used in larger doses as a laxative, you may be able to give it straight or add it to baking. Our local health food store sells suckers sweetened with sorbitol and there is a warning on the package that too many will result in loose stools. > a, > My kids have all struggled a LOT with constipation; restricted sugar, wheat > , dairy helps them tremendously. Guest guest
Dear , Unfortunately I do not get a chance to get to my computer until late at night otherwise I would have answered your post sooner. My son was diag. Jan 17, 2001 with verbal apraxia and oral motor hypotonia. He was 2 and a half and completely non verbal. His only words were mama and dada everything else were grunts and vowel sounds with pointing. He was extremely frustrated and suffered from severe night terrors He had been in therapy 4 times a week since his diag. With slow and little progress. About the same time I found the CHERAB Foundation and read all the positive posts about EFA's. I did my own research and decided to start my son in April. It was the best thing I could have done for my son. He was a completely different child. He was more focused, he worked harder in his sessions, he started speaking first with words and then sentences. His night terrors stopped and he walked around the house humming and singing, he was a much happier. His BM's actually improved and he became more regular. I realize that every child is different and each has there own reaction, but it saddens me that when so many children not just apraxic children are benefiting from EFA's that a post such as your would discourage any new parent on our list from supplementing their child with EFA's. I know EFA's have helped my son I have proof. I had to take him off for two weeks because he had surgery. All WE did was cry. It was horrible. His night terrors came back, he couldn't focus, he started hitting and biting his sister, he became contispated, he would throw his toys across the room in frustration I had a completely different child in my home. When I started him back on EFA's it took three days to get my son back. To me that is no " hope factor " that is proof. And as far as I am concerned we should never lose hope for our children, hope is what pushes us forward to help them it is my life line and always will be. I am so sure that there is a reason that EFA's are helping so many children that I have dedicated my time to raise money for research so we can finally prove to the medical community that there is therapeutic gains to EFA's. It's amazing what you can do when you have a child as an inspiration 10 months ago I was devastated by his diag. and did not think I could help my son, today I am working with medical professionals and researcher's to help find a cure. I have found the strength to make a difference because of my son's determination. He has accomplished more in his 3 years than most people do in a life time. I will not let him down when he is working so hard. Yes I am very passionate about this, WE ALL should be. Remember the movie Lorenzo's oil? Those parents did what ever they could to help there son. Look what they accomplished. So never lose hope, lose hope and you lose everything. I'm not willing to do that there's to much at stake. Guest guest
Try a few dates (no, I mean the kind that grow on trees, silly!) Just make sure you don't eat too many or you will have the opposite problem. I ate most of a bag once and boy was I sorry! Try 5 on the first day. ...Arleen
Guest guest
F.O.S. (-FructoOligoSaccarides) have been " doing the trick " for me for years now: This comes. as a white, candy floss tasting powder which needs to be taken with liquid as it is a bulking agent: (Thus a stool softener.......) FOS seems to have about 5 advantages, when taken daily (or twice daily!) it is normally enough to keep things moving, the increased bulk encouraging peristaltic action: Further, it is a non-irritant (unlike senna, for example), so it can be taken long term without loosing its effectivenes. It is easy & pleasant to take: Apparently it also serves as food for the good gut bacteria, causing them to crowd out the bad bacteria, ( -if coupled with a suitable diet, this seems to relieve flatulence of it`s olfactory nasties: ie, One is much less likely raise a stink!!!) I have also found that physical exercise (sufficient daily movement) makes a noticable difference. In the UK, FOS is marketed as " Colonimax Prebio-FOS " by Healthspan & as " Eliminease " by Nature`s Best. Guest guest
I do 800 MG of Magnesium, 3 days in a row, and that works wonders. Just have to make sure you don't have travel plans for a few days. I started with 250 MG tabs, so was doing 750. I found 400s, but wow are they big. Guest guest
Anyone try dandelion for constipation? Apparently that is my newest problem.. lol... been drinking fruit and veggie juices.. lots of water.. guess the lack of exercise, stress, poor sleep habits etc all have caught up with me due to this surgery... Don't have any prunes on hand... have flaxseed, dandelion root, and other herbs... any suggestions.. pills are hard to swallow so will be making a tea probably... I wasn't feeling that great today so I took a nap in my recliner.. woke up with pain on the left side (front side and back) right below the breast or bra line... Been pooping but it has been on the hard side... so I'm assuming this is what the problem is... Going up to make some dandelion tea unless someone has another idea.. Suzi Suzi What is a weed? Guest guest
To avoid constipation I add raw flaxseeds to everything -- soups after they're cooked, salads..........they swell up into a kind of gel conistency if you leave them to soak a bit. But even that won't prevent constipation when I'm eating cheese/milk products. > > Anyone try dandelion for constipation? > Apparently that is my newest problem.. lol... been drinking fruit and veggie juices.. lots of water.. guess the lack of exercise, stress, poor sleep habits etc all have caught up with me due to this surgery... Guest guest
Hi Bobby, Have you tried magnesium supplements? It sure cleans me out! Tracey > > I think I could use some good advice here. The trial nurse said that constipation is not a side effect of XL228. It does not matter, the fact of the matter is this is a severe problem for me. My gastroenterologist (sp) said to eat 1 cup all bran daily and take 3 doses of metamucil. I also have been eating prunes, until I can no longer get one down, nor can I keep on with the metamucil, it is giving me acid reflux at night. I eat lots of salads, and Fiber One for breakfast. These things are not working, any ideas on what will work?? Maybe some TNT?? ha ha. > Bobby > > > a (Bobby) Doyle > Brecksville, Ohio, USA > DX 05/1995 > 02/2000 - Gleevec Trial/OHSU > 06/2002 - Gleevec/Trisenox Trial/OHSU > 06/2003 - Gleevec/Zarnestra Trial/OHSU > 04/2004 - Sprycel Trial/MDACC, CCR in 10 months > #840 - Zavie's Zero Club > 09/2006 - out of CCR > 04/29/08 - XL228 Trial/ U.of Michigan > 06/02/08 - CCR ( in 4 weeks) > > >

Guest guest
The magnesium comes in pill form either by itself or mixed with calcium and Vit D. You can get it wherever you get any other vitamins or minerals. Tracey > > > > I think I could use some good advice here. The trial nurse said > that constipation is not a side effect of XL228.
