Guest guest
Good articles, Kathy! To those of you who do eat all organic, where do you purchase your products? Do you go though a co-op? I've found the health foods store to be very expensive. There is a Trade's Joe, however it is a good hour drive. --- In health , " Kathy " <vanokat@...> wrote: > > http://www.healthyvim.org/news.html > > Organic Foods: Are They More Nutritious? > > Organic foods have fewer toxic chemicals and benefit the environment and > Farmworkers. Guest guest
My opinion is that if they are grown in an amended soil, with minerals and loads of humus, they will be more nutritious. If they are simply grown without use of pesticides, and NPK added with organic but short term amendments, they will only be free of toxic substances. Guest guest
To those of you who do eat all organic, where do you purchase your products? I eat 99% organic in the spring, summer and fall and about 90% in the winter. Here in eastern PA we have a wonderful farmer's mkt. I go to on Wed. I can get organic produce at super cheapo prices. I also get organic produce in our local grocery store...not extremely expensive. In the winter it's harder to score at the farmer's mkt. They are open year round but the pickins get slim. We also have an organic farm close by and I sometimes go there. Yes...health food stores are expensive. You just do the best you can depending on where you live. Guest guest
I also eat 99% organic. We buy our food at these places: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/ http://www.pccnaturalmarkets.com/ http://millcreek.central-market.com/newSite/millcreek/home.php http://communityfood.coop/ http://www.skagitfoodcoop.com/ http://www.snoislefoods.coop/ -- This one is in my town. I have discovered that just because it says "farmer's market" does not mean organic. Around here unless they are certified they cannot say "organic" and our summer farmer's market only has ONE official organic stand. It's my understanding that Washington state is the number one toughest state to be organic. Our standards are more strict than Oregon or even California. Guest guest
Hard to find where I live... Our local grocery store & Walmart carry a little... otherwise it is an hour trip to a Whole Foods, or trader joes or wild oats. In the summer you have produce markets... but you do the best you can.. Guest guest
I have discovered that just because it says "farmer's market" does not mean organic. We have on big 100% organic stand at the Thurs. farmers mkt. They have a certified organic farm. Very expensive stuff. On Wed. I go to another farmers mkt. They usually have organic mixed in with the regular produce. I do a quick scan of the crates when they are unpacking and spot what is organic that week and what isn't. Then I check the stickers on the produce. The organic produce will always have that official "certified organic" label followed by a code starting with "9". They just mix it all in together and sell it all at the same price so I have to do the detective work. Gloria ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Guest guest
The farmer's market around here doesn't use stickers because it is all locally grown and most of it is grown by the people selling it. In the summer there is a guy at our farmers mkt. who has his own garden and he puts NOTHING on his produce. He and I have talked at length about it. Not certified organic but definitely no sprays or chemicals. I usually buy from him throughout the summer. But I can also get certified organic really cheap at that same market. Hit or miss...I never know what they'll have from week to week. Last summer I got those big fat organic watermelons (with the sticker on 'em) for $2.00. Crossing my fingers this summer
Guest guest
Hi Shari, So do you order organic foods online? Produce? Do any of these places carry young coconuts? I have yet to try those because our Wild Oats doesn't carry any young ones. TerriLynne Shari wrote: ... I also eat 99% organic. Guest guest
I do not order produce on line only because I have all these wonderful stores close by and I get a box delivered to my door every Tuesday by a local guy. For some reason I have never seen young organic coconuts, but my co-op carries the brown, mature, organic coconuts. Go figure, if they're organic as mature weren't they organic as young cocos? No one has been able to answer my questions on that yet! Coconuts and durian are two of my non-organic foods. Shari
Guest guest
I'm with you Gloria, I buy from farmers I know and trust they don't use anything on their produce. We have a huge Hmong population here and they are very precious people who use no chemicals on their food. I buy a lot from them. Guest guest
Camboian, Vietnamese somewhere over there. I'm sorry to be ignornant, but I do not know exactly where they come from. I did a search on them and still can't figure out where they came from. Possibly you're right...Vietnam AND Cambodia. Huge organic score at the farmer's mkt. today. I just can't believe this place. It was packed. I guess everyone has cabin fever. Organic broccoli 33 cents a head, organic swiss chard 40 cents a lb., 3 heads of organic romaine lettuce for $1.00, organic avocados 3/$1.00. A pint of cherry tomatoes..75 cents, cucumbers 3/$1.00. Everything organic with the certified sticker on them. This market is only one day per week and they just want to get rid of the stuff by the end of the day and practically give it away. I get soooo excited everytime I go there. It's the one bonus of living in rural eastern PA. Gloria ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Ohmygosh! Gloria, I am so very jealous!! Here I thought you must have moved some place warm to be going to a farmer's market already this year! You are one lucky woman to have that available to you. I'm in heaven I can get romaine 3 for $2 delivered to the house, but that is the only thing that even comes close to your deals. Ever get any good deals on organic Florida citrus? Just wondering how those prices differ as California got hit HARD with cold weather this winter and killed most of their citrus crops. Guest guest
That sounds like a great place to buy. Terrible place to sell. LOL, we are putting in a big market garden this year, so I am sell-conscious right now. Costco had non-organic tomatoes for $2.50 to $2.75 a pound last week when I was there. Cardboard yuck! My sister tells me that in the SF Bay Area it is common to sell organic heirloom tomatoes for $3.00 a pound. Now that's my kind of market. LOL The weekly share market on www.localharvest.com runs about $25 for a large paper bag full. Guest guest
We have nothing even close to this in WI Do you have farmers markets? I'm curious to know who has access to them and who doesn't. I know Carol in CO has a good one that opens in the Spring and goes until Oct. or November. I don't know why our's are open all year round; even the outdoor ones. But farmers mkts. are definitely the way to go for produce. Gloria ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone.
