Guest guest
From the files For really resistant lice, essential oils can be added to contribute to the efficacy of the vegetable oil, but a skin test should be performed, as some people are sensitive to the oils. To do a skin test, apply a drop of oil to the inside of the elbow and check the area after several hours. If any signs of irritation are seen, do not add essential oils. If irritation is experienced during treatment, shampoo the mixture out immediately. Here's a recipe for a natural lice treatment: 2 ounces vegetable oil (e.g., olive oil) 20 drops tea tree essential oil (melaleuca) 10 drops rosemary essential oil 10 drops lavender essential oil 10 drops lemon essential oil (may be found in spice section of grocery store) To use, combine the ingredients and perform a skin test. If no sensitivity is experienced, apply the mixture to dry hair. Cover hair with a shower cap or even a plastic bag, Leave the mixture on for 1-2 hours. Shampoo the hair 2-3 times to remove the oil. Prevent Reinfection Vigiliant combing will help prevent reinfection. Bedding and clothing needs to be washed and preferably dried in a hot clothes dryer for at least 20 minutes. Brushes, combs, and hair accessories should be soaked in hot water for 20 minutes. Items that cannot be exposed to hot water or to the heat of a dryer may be kept isolated for two weeks to prevent any chance of reinfection from nits that may be present. Guest guest
My daughter has been battling with this on and off this year as well. I finally have it under control. We went down to the local health food store and got some spray on essential oil blend and shampoo/conditioner. I cut her hair short. Long hair is just impossible to comb out as much as you really need to. First I saturated her hair with the oil blend and put a shower cap on her for about 30 minutes. Then combed her hair a small part at a time with a nit comb. Get a flash light, magnifying glass and some paper towels in your work area too. It helped me to look at the comb and really see what I was getting out. Then clean the comb with an old tooth brush to get all the lice off before going to the next small section of hair. I also boil the comb and tooth brush after I am done with all the steps to kill any eggs I missed. This way you are ready to go for the follow up care. When you are done, it is into the bath or shower and follow directions on the bottle of shampoo and conditioner. Comb hair again with clean nit comb. While the person doing all the combing and nit killing is busy, have another person stripping the beds and getting them into the washer. All stuffed toys must be put into plastic bags for 2 weeks or go for a ride in the dryer for 10 minutes on high heat. All washable clothes and linens in hot water and high heat dryer. If you have delicate clothes that won’t survive this, put them in the bags with the stuffed animals. You will need to repeat this process once a week for the next 2 weeks at least as well. Good luck!
