Hi Suzi, thanks you VERY much for these lists. I'm extremely estrogen

and progesterone deficient, and while the B-HRT creams help, I'd much

prefer to supplement with foods whenever possible. Your list is much

more complete than the (puny) one I had. :)

Do you by any chance have a list of progesterone enhancing/inhibiting

foods, too?

Thank you!

How do you know you are deficient? Is there a specific test? Guess I don't want to know! Luckily I have no health insurance so I stay far away from doctors and keep downing those green smoothies.

Bekah, for progesterone, try wild yam... You can get it in tincture form. Also you might look into soybeans. Menopause is the time in a woman's life when menstruation, the monthly menstrual periods, end (usually at about age 51). Following menopause, a woman's ovaries (the twin organs that produce and release an egg during each monthly cycle) stop producing the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. These sex hormones control menstruation and affect the body in many different ways. As estrogen in particular drops to very low levels, your body may respond in several ways: You may experience hot flashes, which can make your face red and cause a sudden sensation of body warmth and then coldness as perspiration cools off. Your sleep may be interrupted. Your vaginal tissues may become thinner, which can cause vaginal dryness, itching and pain during sexual intercourse. Your bones often become thinner and lose calcium, which can lead to spine fractures, a curved spine (dowager's

hump) and hip fractures, which are a major cause of hospitalization in elderly women. Your brain may respond to a lack of estrogen by causing mood swings, some memory loss, irritability, a lack of well-being, or depression. Your cholesterol level in your bloodstream may increase. Many symptoms of hormonal imbalance are found only in modern society. Stress, processed foods, and other factors unique to today's society are the reasons many women do not get enough essential nutrients to create hormonal balance. It is almost always progesterone, NOT estrogen, that is deficient. Virtually all the commonly known symptoms are those of estrogen dominance. When balance is restored by increasing natural progesterone levels, these symptoms typically disappear. Natural progesterone is created by the ovaries at the time of ovulation. It is critical to understand that a woman can have her period and still not be

ovulating. If she does not ovulate, she will not create the progesterone necessary to remove the fiber and lining that has been stored. The repeated storing without the essential cleaning can eventually result in fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, uterine cysts, bloating, weight gain and depression. AFTER MENOPAUSE Ovaries no longer produce at previous levels. Although estrogen is typically only produced at 40% of previous produced amounts it is still adequate for most women. It is not a lack of ESTROGEN that creates the problems. It is the lack of PROGESTERONE. If a woman's body is given back the progesterone it can no longer produce, menopausal symptoms disappear! Balance is critical.

NATURAL CREAM VS. PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS Pharmaceutical "hormones" are only chemical imitations of the body's natural secretions. They are NOT the same. Estrogen replacement drugs have been associated with increased cancer of both the uterus and breast. The most commonly prescribed drug has more than 30 negative side effects listed in the Physicians Desk Reference. Such "progestins" are far LESS effective than natural progesterone. Natural progesterone has no side effects. Nearly every culture in the world uses natural plant medicinals to support women's health and hormones. Plants such as soybeans, wild yams, and certain herbs are rich in progesterone virtually identical to that produced in a woman's body. SV <shavig@...> wrote: How do you know you are deficient? Never had any of the symptoms, just woke up one morning and discovered I hadn't had a period in a long time. I might having thinning bones and I might have elevated cholesterol but I wouldn't take their drugs even if I would see a doctor to have it checked. I used to use a "natural" cream, but kept forgetting. Guess like everything else, I'm doomed! I eat the seeds in my fruit and I don't do anything for my menopause. Egad, oh well. I ate 15 mangoes yesterday and two pineapples and two heads of romaine, maybe that will help.

Good! Soy beans are way overrated and not all that good for anybody and especially not children. The soy formula is akin to feeding them birth control pills everyday. How great is that?!

I have to stay away from soybeans, they wreak havoc on my thyroid, suppress the activity too much. :(

I totally agree! I cannot digest soy products at all and I'm very

upset that s have put soy protein isolate in a lot of their

soups etc. plus I,too, have thyroid issues. Thanks for all the info on

foods containing natural estrogen.

Oh no! The dog gets the mango pits. He cleans the up really well. I actually had to take a bucket to the backyard and clean them up when the son was going to mow. I counted 48 mango pits and 16 coconut hulls. The neighbors must think our yard looks like a graveyard!

Some people are sensitive to soy

products. Read labels very carefully. American food companies put soybean

oil, soy lecithin, and soy flour in a lot of things.

I don't do soy but I do know some who do... You're welcome. What thyroid issues? Suziearthmother1111 <pink627@...> wrote: I totally agree! After my total hysterectomy in 1998, I

went through some menopause symptoms. I did not take the prescribed

estrogen/progesterone tablets and went with a blend of herbs from our local

health store. I think it had wild yam, black cohosh, chaste tree, and…

that’s all I can remember. Mostly though I just got through the hot

flashes by adding a little fan right next to my side of the bed and I kept a

spray bottle of cool water with me as well. Spritz some on your face under

a fan and no hot flashes hehehe. I also started sweating at odd times and

got less tolerant to cold, so for that, layering clothes works for me.

The worst of it only lasted about 1 year and I really think I only had symptoms

because I was still a bit young and the change did not happen naturally or

gradually. So far my bones seem to be holding up fine, but I am only 42

so time will tell I guess.

Hypo, tho it's improving considerably with raw glandulars. I have

CFIDS and fibro and am treating almost entirely alternatively.

Currently I'm loosely following Amy Yasko's simplified protocol. I

say 'loosely' b/c of course ya gotta tinker and tweak, lol. Besides,

mostly I think what ails me can be taken care of with foods, herbs, and

other alternative methods, so a fair amount of supplementation is done

via foods especially.

CFIDS and FMS are responsive to

alternative therapies. It will take some time though so hang in there.

Good one! I was really scared when I realized I hadn't had a period. I thought I was going to be one of those women who had a baby fall out and exclaim "I didn't even know I was pregnant!" Ran and got a p.g. test and obviously it came up negative, but my naturopath laughed until she cried when I told her that one. She said "you're done, just be happy and don't worry about it." So I accepted her thoughts and went on with my life.

Lucky you!! My hot flashes steamed up my glasses and felt like my

brain was on fire. I have managed to keep them under control with a

black cohosh combo. I also have FMS and so far (knock on wood) been

able to manage it with natural products and exercise.

Thanks Janet, Hanging in there is exactly what I've been doing (and

constantly tweaking this and that and everything, lol), and slowly but

surely things are improving. :)

My long-range goal is to be the first person totally cured of CFIDS and

fibromyalgia via alternative means and it be medically documented which

I suspect is rather driving the two docs I see a little batty. Too bad.

The good news is, I think I've found a doctor who not only takes our

insurance but also is 100% behind alternative treatment for

CFIDS/fibro/hormonal imbalances/etc. WHOOHOOO!!! She's out of town

but only a few hours, and I have an appt this Wed.

Excellent! You keep that great attitude;

it is what puts my CFIDS in remission repeatedly.
