Guest guest
My question is, all I have is dehydrated cane juice, think that would work? I'd give it a try because they like nectar and sweet stuff. Don't see why cane juice wouldn't work. Gloria ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Does anyone have a hummingbird feeder? I got one and there were no instructions what to feed them. Went on line and found the same recipe at many sites: 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. My question is, all I have is dehydrated cane juice, think that would work? Guest guest
I just don't want to make them sick. I know you can't use honey and I wasn't sure if cane juice came in that category. Thanks, Shari
Guest guest
I've heard that they won't take the feed if it is made with beet sugar, only cane sugar. So I would surmise that the dehydrated cane juice (which I love!) would work. Guest guest
Do not use distilled water... add red food coloring unless the bottle feeder is red.. also I know Dextrose is okay... here is one site.. http://www.hummingbirdsociety.org/HB101/HB101.asp you can probably write them for an answer also. Guest guest
hi..gotta put my 2 cents in <G> I've been feeding the little critters for years and I go by what I read that the San Diego Zoo uses for hummers. I used to use 1 cup of granulated sugar to 3 cups of boiled water, but read later that the zoo and a number of hummer lovers thought that it is best to use 1 cup sugar to 4 water and not to put any coloring or anything else in it as it could contaminate it. Have always had a lot of hummers fighting over my feeders. Guest guest
Thanks Granny Lee, that's exactly the recipe I've been receiving from others and many sites on the internet. 4 parts water to 1 part sugar and no coloring. Shari
Guest guest
Almost forgot... get the feeders that have a perch on them.. the hummingbird uses less energy if it can perch and drink.. otherwise it has to drink much more because the the energy it's using to stay flying while drinking. Guest guest
Dang, too late they don't have perches. In fact, I don't think any of them had perches at Lowe's. Shari
Guest guest
I used to have hum feeders (both). and they used the perch ones more than the others... and then I found out that they expend alot of energy hovering while feeding. I think mfgrs think people will enjoy watching them hover more than giving them food. SuziSV <shavig@...> wrote: Dang, too late they don't have perches.
