Its can sometimes cause gripping so it may be best to take with a carminative such as ginger be taken with it. Jethro Kloss recommends combining it with an aromatic herb such as goldenrod, mint, rosemary, anise, balm, allspice, buchu, coriander, lavender, or pennyroyal. It is to be combined with other herbs when it is used for bowel elimination so as to reduce it from a cathartic to an effective laxative.
