When using certain oils I think some people throw out the baby with the bath

water.

Some guides say never to use it because it's poisonous but I know of several

best-selling 100 pure essential oil blends that use tansy as well as companies

that sell pure tansy oil and people aren't keeling over dead from it. The only

detailed explination I've seen of the caution comes from Salvatore Battaglia who

says that high doses of thujone, one of the chemical components of tansy, can be

poisonous. Obviously then, high doses of tansy should be avoided, too. The

symptoms of overexposure include vomiting, cramps, rapid breathing and rigid

pupils.

I don't think a few drops in a cologne worn occasionally is going to hurt

anyone.

BTW, the 1983 British Herbal Pharmacopoeia lists the herb tansy for treatment of

round worms in chldren and topical application for scabies.

I'm thinking the same thing. I actually read some on the internet about it, and

it said that people actually used to use it in food. I figured it surely had to

be with large doses that it was poisonous.

Tansy The oil contains thujone, which is an insect repellant. Leaves contain sesquiterpenes which has anti-microbial properties. The leaves also display anti-edemic effects. The polysaccharides in the leaves also have ulcer-protective effects. The tansy flower and herb used in preparations can be used for "deworming" for migraines, neuralgia, rheumatism, bloating and to increase appetite.Tansy oil has antimicrobial, anthelmintic properties and repells insects. The oil is used internally for gout, rheumatism, joint pain, stomach cramps, gastrointestinal infections, intermittent fevers, dizziness and for dysmenorrhea. It is used externally for rheumatism, gout, contusions, sprains, and wounds. (I do not use this oil internally and caution those who do... I have used it externally in a carrier oil)This herb should not be used during pregnancy. Some of the volatile

oils will act as an abortifacient. The high thujone content can lead to poisoning. And some people develop a sensitization to use on the skin. The lethal dose is considered to be 15-30 grams and the therapeutic dose is considered to be a single dose of 0.1 gram. This herb should not be given to pets. and should be used with caution and care I do have this plant growing in my garden to help repel bugs. Suzi What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet
