Sub - A role of Ayurvedic medicines in PLWHAs (people living with HIV/AIDS )

(reference - message 2227 of AIDS INDIA e mail discussion group )

Dear all

Thanks for the interest all of you have shown in Ayurveda. Instead of replying

each mail separately, I am writing in forum.

1. All of you have has requested for the books will be receiving it soon.

2. A NEW HORIZON IN AIDS _ AYURVEDA (author - Dr. Anagha Kulkarni, INDIA)

This book is for information only. Not for priscription. Consult your Ayurvedic

physician before taking any Ayurvedic medicine. Many people think that Ayurvedic

medicines don't have side effects. But wrong medicines taken in a wrong way may

create problem to your health which may disturb your daily routine.

3. Please note, I am insisting on CARE for PLWHAs not CURE with Ayurvedic

medicines. If anybody wants to reprint the information in the magazine or

journals please don't misprint the word CARE as CURE. I request you to take

care this while printing the word CARE.

4. CTT (Cost efficient Triple Therapy i.e. MEDICATION, YOGA with MEDITATION &

NUTRITION ) Is not a substitute for Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) If any one is

already under ART please should not discontinue, use CTT in addition to ART.

CTT is to maintain health.

If you are HIV +ve, your CD4 - CD8 counts are good and your physician does not

recommend you ART then you can adopt CTT lifestyle. But investigate blood for

CBC, ESR per month & CD4 - CD8 counts every 3- 6 months. (consult your

physician, for an explanation of these values)

5. Recently, I attended & participated World Ayurveda Summit 2003 at Bangalore.

Many ayurvedic doctors are managing HIV/AIDS patients in their private Clinics

or institutions ( offering symptomatic treatment). When I asked them to share

their experiences in conferences other than ayurvedic conference, the answer was

as follows "

a) No proper follow up of patient.

B) No adequate records or investigation of reports

c) Patients consults more than one doctor, takes allopathic medicines at a

time without informing the doctor (Self medication)

d) Fear of being labeled as a quack or fraud.

Few people make claims of HIV cure, but other sincere ayurvedic doctors are

also labelled as quack.

6. I have received mails claiming more than care. I request those people to

open their knowledge to world. ( and get noble prize !)

7. Making any claim without disclosing names of herbs or medicines and with

unsatisfactory scientific research & statistical data result in blaming

AYURVEDA. & creating misunderstandigs about whole science.

8. I REQUEST YOU TO RESPECT AYURVEDA. Ayurveda is considered to be the oldest

healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means " The Science of Life. " Ayurvedic

knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the

" Mother of All Healing. " It stems from the ancient Vedic culture

The word AYURVEDA, in Indian System of Medicine, is composed of the words AYU &

VEDA, Ayu means life and Veda denotes Science. Thus AYURVEDA means " Science of

Life " or " Science of Living " . AYU is defined as a combination of body, senses,

mind and spirit. Body without senses, mind without spirit is dead and is not

AYU (Living). Ayurveda has mainly three aims :

a) To preserve the Health

B) To promote the Health of the Healthy People

c) To treat the disease of the Patients

Ayurveda lays emphasis not only on its remedies but also on the importance of

diet, nutrition and lifestyle in preventing health problems and in promoting

well-being.

The treatment is three fold : (a) Ayurvedic supplements, (B) Dietary

restrictions according to the causative factors & © Behaviourial changes

according to the causative factors.

Ayurvedic treatment is based on the principle to reach to the cause of the

disease by finding out facts from the history of the patient. Then treat the

imbalance in the body caused by disease by drug, diet and behaviourial changes.
