HIV mapping exercise to be over by March

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2004 12:28:42 AM ]

CHANDIGARH : A regional review meeting on mapping of high risk groups

was organised by the Punjab state AIDS control society on Thursday.

The meeting was organised to review and assess the progress of the

mapping exercise in Punjab , Haryana, HP and Rajasthan under the

guidance of the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO).

The prevalence of HIV is considered to be on the lower side in Punjab

and as per the HIV sentinel surveillance round 2002, the prevalence

in low risk population was 0.37 per cent and high risk population was

1.6 per cent.

The director of the Punjab AIDS control society, Anjali Bhawra, said

the mapping exercise is being done in 12 district of the state.

These include, Gurdaspur, Patiala , Faridkot, Bathinda, Ludhiana ,

Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Amritsar , Sangrur, Ropar, Ferozepur and

Fatehgarh Sahib.

This is meant to identify the population group at high risk for

contracting HIV/AIDS and also to identify the locations where they

are concentrated. The first report on mapping for Punjab will be

ready by March end this year.
