Here is the famous Vinegar of The Four Thieves recipe; it is sometimes called Grave Robber’s Blend.

That recipe is strange because once when I was making Super Tonic I went to a nearby Mennonite organic herb farm for dried cayenne. She asked what concoction I was making and I told her...onions, garlic, cayenne, horseradish and apple cider vinegar. She told me that was the formula for the Four Thieves recipe that were stolen and used during the plague. Your recipe is different. I wonder which one is right? Or both??

There have obviously been many spins of the tale. Here is the recipe stated to be the original: Original Recipe for Four Thieves Formula 3 pints white vine vinegar handful wormwood handful meadowsweet handful juniper berries handful wild marjoram handful sage 50 cloves 2 oz. elecampane root 2 oz. angelica 2 oz. rosemary 2 oz. horehound 3 g camphor Instructions: steep the plants in the vinegar for 10 days. Force through a sieve. Add the camphor dissolved in the acetic acid, filter. this formula is useful in the prevention of infectious diseases. It says to rub it on the face and hands and burn it in the room. It can also be kept in small bottles that are carried on the person so that the vapors can be inhaled. Hi Suzi,

Well, here I am with more questions. In the below recipe, I see no

mention of the acetic acid until you dissolve the camphor in it. How

much acetic acid, I wonder.

Also, isn't it interesting that it gives the herbs in ounces and the

camphor in grams? Grams are always confusing to me. Can anyone translate

grams into ounces for me? I am metrically challenged. :-)

Woops, I forgot to include the recipe with my questions. And the

questions were, how much acetic acid, as it isn't listed with the other

ingredients, and can someone translate the 2 grams of camphor into

ounces?

Original Recipe for Four Thieves Formula

3 pints white vine vinegar

Handful wormwood

Handful meadowsweet

Handful juniper berries

Handful wild marjoram

Handful sage

50 cloves

2 ounces elecampane root

2 ounces angelica

2 ounces rosemary

2 ounces horehound

3 grams camphor

Steep herbs in vinegar 10 days. Force through a sieve. Add the camphor

dissolved in the acetic acid, filter.

this formula is useful in the prevention of infectious diseases. It

says to rub it on the face and hands and burn it in the room. It can

also be kept in small bottles that are carried on the person so that the

vapors can be inhaled.

Any recipe that is hand down in this

manner over a long period of time will get garbled. Additionally, I suspect

that there were more than one group of looters, therefore, there were more than

one basic recipe. Just my thoughts.
