The partial solution which has worked for me is to use Eudora Pro as my email program. Eudora allow the easy viewing of multiple emails by simply using the arrow keys to step through a list of emails, with no need to open each individual email. Individual or multiple emails can be selected for deletion, and then be deleted by pressing the delete key, all without having been opened.
