Boy, am I doom and gloom this a.m. On top of all this my 21 month old has been having sleep terrors. Hey wait, he slept all night last night. Wow, I got seven straight hours of sleep. WOW!!! I don't know when I can say that happened last. Well, I haven't heard anything back on 's celiac or about addressing his central sleep apnea. How long did it take everyone to hear after testing about celiac? I sooo wish we could figure out a way to improve the sleep issue. It would go a long way in improving 's and my quality of life. Guest guest
Get a notetaker. That is what I did. There is usually services where the college will hire another student in the class to take notes. You can sit by that student and if you need something confirmed then the notetaker can write the 'word' down for you. Guest guest
Lee, Which school are you going to? I went to the UW for 2 years, and they provided me with CART in every classroom, without question. I asked about CART, and they were like, " Sure, not a problem! Just give us a copy of your schedule and you'll have one in each class! " I could not believe how smooth that went! Of course, this was before I got implanted. If you feel you really prefer CART, and if you find yourself confused at times with ASL interpreters, then you need to take a stand and politely state that you are confused with ASL, and fear you may miss key points in discussion/lecture. This will be eliminated with CART - with CART, you will have equal access to everything that's in the classroom. If they persist, and cry " funding limitations, budget cutbacks, etc " , mention the ADA, and as a public entity, they are required by law to provide each " disabled " person with equal access. Utilizing CART fulfills that requirement in your situation. You may need to tell them that this is YOUR situation, what may have worked for other deaf people may not work for YOU. I've had to post that argument a few times when dealing with administrators. Let me know how it goes! ~Andy Back to School HELP,,, any idea please! I am going back to school, hopefully this summer (depends on grant availability), otherwise this fall. The college I am going to do not have CART due to cost but they have offered me ASL interpreter. I am familiar with ASL but,, I am finding myself being confused at times, now that I can hear bit and bit without lipreading and SEEING the same thing via interpreter. Any ideas what I can do?? One idea that I can do ... doing what I did yesterday at church, I told my daughter NOT to interpret and let me TRY to lipread the whole sermon and I did pretty well, only resorting to daughter when I wasn't sure what I was hearing, such as,,, " harlot " , I saw/heard it,, but sign to daughter H A R .....????? She signed back to me as what I was trying to understand. You think that might be a solution? or bad idea? Lee

Guest guest
Thank you! Truth be told, I'd like to continue studying... but it's SO hard on my family. I've pretty much decided to work for a couple years, 'til the baby's older, and THEN go back. The feeling of accomplishment is AWESOME! Congrats to your sis, too! : ) Re: RE: Back to school (was: thank you!, anjil ( sorry, it got long)) Congratulations, Lydia. I just attended my younger sister's graduation Friday night. She is 40, has a 5 year old at home, and graduated with dual Associates Degrees, both with highest honors! We were so proud of her! Always go for your dreams, it's what keeps you alive! RE: Back to school (was: thank you!, anjil ( sorry, it got long)) It's never too late, Kenya. I just turned 39 in June... and graduated from a 2 year degree course a few weeks later. There were people at my school as old as 70! I highly encourage you to follow your instinct here... it will be challenging and help you to feel an incredible sense of accomplishment. Please keep us posted as you continue this journey! I'd love to hear what you decide to study, and remember that we'll ALWAYS be here to encourage you when you need it! Best of luck to you! Guest guest
Your story brings me few memories, and reminds me how much I take Freedom for granted. I am very happy with my CI as much as I am for you! It's been a year since I got implanted, and I realize how easy it is for me to interact with many hearing people. I can't wait to have my second CI, and I have made the decision to have it by Christmas! I look forward to having it! Kozlik <lisak70@...> wrote: Today was my first day back at school and it was filled with so many exciting sounds! I had several CI moments including being able to hear the " stop requested " ding on the bus as well as my professor without my FM system. The latter literally brought me to tears since it has been over 10 years since I have been able to hear and understand someone from a distance. (Picture me crying in class and trying not to make a spectacle of myself. It wasn't easy! LOL!) I was also able to carry on a conversation with my captionist who called my name and stopped me in a very loud and crowded student union. Although I needed one or two repeats during our conversation, I was thrilled that I was able to talk to her at all considering how much background noise there was. Back to the class lecture -- The only difficulty I had was concentrating on what was being said not only because of my excitement at being able to hear and understand, but also because of the different ways people speak. Although I'm able to understand speech quite well with my CI, I still need to become used to people who speak a little faster as I'm sure people with normal hearing do. I know all of that will come in time though. To my surprise, I found that it wasn't as difficult to listen and digest information in a 3 hour lecture as I thought it would be. My next class is on Thursday -- also a 3 hour lecture. I'll be sure to report any new CI moments, but as far as today goes...I couldn't have asked for a better first day back to school!! <smile> Left ear - Nucleus 24 Contour Advance with 3G Implanted: 12/22/04 Activated: 1/18/05 Right ear - Nucleus Freedom Implanted: 2/1/06 Activated: 3/1/06 --Mekutochi Left Ear -- Cochlear Nucleus Freedom Implanted: August 15, 2005 Activated: August 23, 2005 Right Ear -- Pending --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Guest guest
Hi all. I just wanted to let you all know I will be going back to college starting Wednesday evening. I am furthering my education in healthcare administration and will graduate in January 2009 if all goes well. I have been looking for a job for over 2 months now with no luck. So I signed up with another college in my area for full time classes. I am still looking for work too, so I might not be as responsive as I have been this summer. I am going to try and check e-mails every day. It worries me to be getting further in debt via federal loans, but I feel I have no choice at this point. It is either go back to school or watch my kids go hungry. Janet
Guest guest
janet, Wishing you the very best. I went back to school, got great GPA, degree in Communications and no job. I think perhaps being very specific with an area of expertise is the key I missed. So for example, if healthcare administration, is there an area you can focus in on: i.e. human resources, training, etc.? For me this has been my limiting factor and praying for motivational speaking opportuntiies as my ultimate life goal. No we don't want those kids to go hungry. Will you be interning or such as you go to school in the field for experience? hugs, carolg > > > > Hi all. Guest guest
Hi Carol, I am thinking of going with coding certification along with my degree this time. I went with medical transcription last time and can not find work. The voice recognition technology today is eliminating those jobs. Coding involves the number systems that identify illnesses, procedures, and equipment that allow the insurance companies to pay the doctor. So coders get paid very well. The college I am attending this year does have a good job referral program, and I signed up for the Federal work study program too. If this doesn’t work, I will go on to clinical medicine and get in that way. Eventually my persistence will pay off. Guest guest
Well, I have already gone for 2 years at our local community college. You would need to pass entrance exams on reading, writing, and math to enter directly into a program like this. If you don’t, you simply start off with some developmental courses, according to what you need. After that, coursework includes medical terminology, which is basically learning Latin and Greek words and their meanings; clinical terminology, which is knowing the names and uses of surgical instruments and basic medical protocols, as well as some medical history; medical records, which is all the different ways, both paper and electronic, you can file patient records in a medical office; extremely deep English grammar and formatting; coding and insurance billing, which is how to look up the numbers that go with the procedures and diagnoses we have all seen on medical paperwork; computer courses, which usually focus of Microsoft Office programs; and anatomy and physiology, which is the hard science of body systems and how they work. I have my certificates in health records and medical transcription and will have an associate’s degree in healthcare administration by January 2009. All medical records are being converted to electronic form everywhere in the United States right now, so there should be a lot of jobs opening up.
