Hypothyroidism, the medical term for an under-active thyroid, has such an unbelievably broad range of subtle symptoms that it is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The symptoms of hypothyroidism usually arise from the sluggish behavior of another organ or system within the body. The single most common complaint among people with under-active thyroids is low energy. But since the condition can cause any organ or system to function below par, symptoms can include heart palpitations, high cholesterol, digestive problems, constipation, circulatory problems, anemia, allergies, frequent infections, sleep disturbances, fatigue, muscle weakness, hair loss, dry skin, acne, eczema, infertility, premenstrual syndrome, memory loss, depression, difficulty losing weight, and intolerance of extreme heat or cold. All of these are physical manifestations of the metabolic slowdown that accompanies thyroid hormone deficiency. Hypothyroidism can manifest itself as any of the following conditions. If even one of them applies to you, then you may have an under-active thyroid. * Allergies * Anemia * Angina * Atherosclerosis (hardening and clogging of the arteries) * Brittle nails * Chronic or frequent infections * Cold hands and feet * Constipation * Depression * Difficulty losing weight * Digestive problems * Dry skin * Fatigue * Hair loss * Headaches * Heart rhythm disturbances * High cholesterol * Immune dysfunction * Infertility * Irregular menstrual periods * Lethargy * Loss of appetite * Loss of libido * Low resistance to colds and flu * Memory problems * Mental sluggishness * Muscle weakness and atrophy * Slowness of movement * Slow wound healing * Stiff joints I've found that certain symptoms serve as fairly accurate predictors of hypothyroidism. Test for the condition whenever a person has one or more of the following: high cholesterol, anemia, allergies, fatigue, infertility,

premenstrual syndrome, chronic infection or illness, or temperature intolerance. Kelp and iodine are good to take for this. Generally, hypothyroidism slows the

metabolism and causes problems related to that; i.e. being cold most of the

time, stubborn obesity, depression. Hyperthyroidism is the opposite and

causes things like exophthalmoses (bulging of the eyes), weight loss, insomnia,

tachycardia (rapid heart beat), etc. Both conditions can be caused by any

number of problems. So find out what is the problem, and then decide how

you want it treated.

Interestingly, my thyroid is working at a 58%, but I'm feeling hot all the time and I have a terrible sleep disorder. Often certain symptoms can be misleading.
