I think Debbie gave you a great explanation about the difference between

passive and dynamic orthotic devices. My daughter wore a passive helmet, but

we live in Oklahoma and got it at a local hospital in our area. I think the

DOCband is referenced here more often then the passive devices and even the

STARband. Cranial Technologies make the DOCband and specialize in this type

of orthotic device. Their orthotists specialize in treating babies with the

band. STARbands and helmets are made by local orthotists who often make other

types of orthotic devices other then helmets/bands and don't necessarily work

exclusively with babies. My advice would be to really ask questions of your

orthotist and see what kind of experience they have with their device. If

your orthotist has lots of experience and is skilled and professional then

you should have good luck with your band/helmet.

Let us know how things go at Boston Childrens. Good luck!

Hi ,

We actually go through Boston's Children's Hospital. We originally saw Dr.

Madsen (the neuro) and he then sent us to the NOPCO center for the casting,

etc. Our Orthotist is Mike Azarian, who is absolutely wonderful and keeps

our son laughing the whole visit through. They do use a passive helmet. In

the 4 weeks has been wearing it we have seen correction, and we go in

every 3 weeks for checks and refittings. Our little guy is growing like

crazy so we might have to make the check ups a little closer together, but

all in all I have been very happy. The helmet looks just like the band I

see in all the pictures of these little cuties. I was concerned because

when I heard helmet I pictured this big football type thing, but in

actuality it is quite similar in appearance to the band. If you have any

questions please feel free to contact me individually and I would be happy

to help.

Boston Children's has a wonderful reputation all around, and we have had a

very positive experience with them thus far.

Good luck with everything!

Trip to Boston

Hi, and I are taking our daughter Leanna to Boston Children's

Hospital to meet with a doctor and have her fitted for a helmet

before we return to London. Has anyone had any experience with Boston

Children's Hospital? They make reference to a passive helmet. With

all we have seen about the DOC band we are wondering if there are

significant differences. Has anyone else had a similar experience.

Thanks

Hi ,

I forgot to ask in my previous post, but will you be traveling back and

forth from London for the checks, or is there someone in London that you can

see? If you are traveling back to the States please let me know if we can

help in any way. We live about 45 minutes outside of the city (that's

non-rush hour time of course!).

Hi -

My son who is 10mos. old started going to Boston Childrens 4 mos

ago. His neurologist is Dr. Mark Proctor and he sees a couple different

orthotists @ Nopco...Mike and Randy. Everyone has been extremely helpful

and thoughtful. Not to mention the fact that has responded to the

treatment extremely well. We actually will be seeing both doctors tomorrow

(we go in every other Friday). The helmet treatment is passive and has

been great! was considered severe when we started and when you take

his helmet off you can't even tell. We will be getting some new

measurements tomorrow so I'm anxious to find out how much improvement he's

had.

We originally planned on going w/the DOC Band, we actually felt that it was

the only and best way to go. But I must say that once we met w/Mark

Proctor and saw the treatment and outcome of many patients, we decided to

try it out. I am so glad we did too! has done tremendously well

and these are truly some " top notch " doctors and surgeons at Boston

Childrens, so we feel very comfortable w/putting our child in their care.

We too live about 45 minutes north of Boston. So please let me know if

there is anything I can do to help. I just gave my notice at work to

become a stay at home Mom, so my email address @ home is brownys4@...
