Oh Jill I have been stressing about this bottle weaning thing since our 12 month check up in December and I still cant seem to figure it out! is a master at the sippy cup and has been for atleast 3 months now-but he refuses to take anything but water out of it and wont drink milk out of it come hell or high water. My DR said-just don't offer him anything but milk and eventually he will take it and as long as he has 3 diapers a day that is fine until he starts taking all of his liquid from the bottle-then they will pick up again but not a lot as toddlers require less fluids at this point on. Well, I don't know- I managed to get to 2 bottles one before night time sleep and one before his nap but my hubby says no to stopping them because he is a moose of a child (the size of a 21 month old per our ped) and we want to be sure he gets enough calcium. I did not protest too loudly on this because I cant imagine getting him to sleep without the bottle. I was able to stand tall and let him cry it out in the middle of the night and early morning but that is as far as my super human mommy strength would let me go. If I was in your situation I would really focus on getting them to learn to drink from the cup when they are upright in the chair and when they are proficient with that then I would concentrate eliminating the bottles. If they haven't learned how to use the sippy cup it will likely be tiring and frustrating for them at first and you don't want them not to have any fluids at all. Have you tried one of those 4 step cups that have the handles with the nipple then the soft sippy then a harder plastic sippy and then a straw?? That may be helpful for you but I would definitely go with a cup that has handles on either side. To this day still refuses to hold a bottle which is just fine with me-but he can hang his sippy with the best of them. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Jill,

I don't think it is all that uncommon to have fewer wet diapers when they

come off the bottle. If you offer water and milk throughout the day via sippy

cup then you should be ok. If you are worried about calcium intake then maybe

try some yogurt, ice cream or cottage cheese during the day as well. If their

mouths are wet and their eyes look moist then they are probably not

dehydrated. Good luck and let us know how the weaning goes.

Jill-

Hi. I just took my son, , who is almost a year old, off the bottle, and we have had no problems at all. However, he is still on two 8 ounce sippy cups of Toddler formula a day, just because he is used to his morning and evening bottles, and I figured this would be easier than taking it away altogether at once. He is doing well, and eating normal foods, as well as drinking lots of water and juice out of a sippy cup. He is having less wet diapers, but that is because he isn't having his four or five 8 ounce bottles a day anymore. As long as the liquids are available to them, you shouldn't worry.
