Guest guest
Hi jumping in there on this. With Graces helmet it is both of those apparently. The orthotist said that it will apply slight pressure to the side that has drifted due to the tort and then it also has a space in the back for her head to fill into. Does that sound right that it can do both? Just wondering. It is locally made I am assuming because he cast it himself and it took about 10 days to get it and he never mentinoed DOC or STARband to us. Thanks
Guest guest
Hi everyone, My name is Dina and my 5 1/2 year old daughter is . Some of you my all ready be familiar with us from the torticollis group I joined last week. Wednesday we go for a second opinion as to whether or use a helmet to correct her plagio. She has flatening on the right side (same side as tort) and it seems to be extended to the back of her head now. As far as I face goes, I feel her left eye is smaller and her right cheeck fuller. Her eyes and everything else appears to be fine. Question - what is the difference between a helmet and a band? Is it only that the band is open on top or are there other differences as well. Can anyone think of any pertinent questions I should make sure I ask the neuro on Wednesday? My peds are against the helmet. They feel that over time she will be fine and I shouldn't bother. My PT and one neurologist are " pro " helmet. I am getting my last and final opinion on Wednesday before we make a decision. Was anyone deciding whether or not to use the helmet and decide against it? What were the results? It seems to me whoever has opted for the hlemt/band has been happy that they did. Thanks so much and have a great day. Dina &
Guest guest
Dina: HI & welcome to our group! I'm going to assume you made a typo on 's age and that she's just 5.5 MOS old, not YRS, right?? The differences between a helmet and band. Helmets are locally made by an orthotist at your local hospital. They are often less expensive than either the DOCband or STARband. The main difference of a helmet vs. band, is that a helmet is called " passive " . Passive means that the helmet has an open area in the flat side of the head, that simply allows room for the flat side to grow into as your child hits growth spurts.. The DOCband & STARband are both " aggressive " . Meaning they both apply very slight pressure to the non flat side of the baby's head, which " pushes out " the flat side as your baby grows. The pressure is very slight & has NO effect on the baby's developmental progress. There are so many differing opinions in the medical field today regarding helmets & bands to treat plagio. I am happy I had Abby banded. The decision is entirely yours as a parent to make. Good luck at the neuro's Weds., please let us know how it goes. A question you might as is what type of helmet or band he prescribes? Debbie Abby's mom DOCGrad MI > Hi everyone, > My name is Dina and my 5 1/2 year old daughter is .
