Guest guest
Dear Forum: My name is Happymon . I am a Doctoral student at the Centre for Diplomatic Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. I am doing a research paper under a fellowship given by the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (www.rcss.org ) Colombo, Sri Lanka on “HIV/AIDS as National Security Threat to India”. While my general field of specialization is Security Studies, my area of specialization for a long time has been alternative security studies, especially Human Security. I firmly believe that there is a strong inter-linkage between Human Security and National Security though it is not an accepted fact in the area of International Relations and Security Studies. This is where, I believe, a study of this kind assumes great importance because it aims to connect HIV/AIDS to National Security. Along with this study I am also involved with a project at JNU on Human Security in India, which aims to make a Human Security Index for the Indian States based on certain variables selected differently from the Human Development Index. I am attaching a set of questions along with this mail. I would be grateful if you could kindly answer those questions. In fact, this is first of this kind of a study which aims to co-relate HIV/AIDFS and India’s national security. Kindly see below for the questions. Research Questions 1) Which are the most affected groups by HIV/AIDS? Is the general public the high-risk group of the day? 2) In what way does HIV/AIDS affect the economic sector (such as agriculture, productivity, transport, construction, migrant labor etc? 3) Does it affect the education sector (teachers and students)? 4) What is the status of the AIDS orphans? 5) Have there been any social conflicts arising out of HIV/AIDS epidemic? 6) Does it lead to resource crunch on other sectors (like expenditure on other diseases and social welfare schemes?) 7) Is there any link between HIV/AIDS epidemic and insurgency/terrorism/violence in the northeast of India? 8)How low is life expectancy among HIV/AIDS affected people? 9) Does HIV/AIDS directly contribute to child labor and students dropping out of schools? 10) How many uniformed personnel are regular visitors of brothels? (it might tell something about the spread of HIV/AIDS among them) 11) How would you evaluate Indian government’s strategy to combat the killer disease? 12) What is its impact on women? 13) What is the role of the mobile population in spreading the disease (refugees, migrants and so on)? 14) How does HIV/AIDS affect social and familial structures? Thank you. Happymon Centre for Diplomatic Studies, School of International Studies Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi And Observer Research Foundation New Delhi www.orfonline.org E-mail: Happy M.
